Checking out pipes to buy for my wife's Sportster she has an 06 1200, with stock pipes. -the dealer says slip-on pipes are, like, $200.00. I don't know what slip-on pipes are. He also said more expensive pipes can run to $800.00. What do you get for more money, and what are the differences? A related question-my bike is a 02 Low Rider with straight Vance and Hines pipes. Dealer says the baffles were taken off, and will, in the long run, make a top replacement due sooner. Also, he says you lose about 5HP off the engine when you remove the baffles. I bought the bike used, from the dealer, and the previous owner obviously was the one who removed the baffles.

A friend of mine pulled the baffles out of her Carbed 883 sporty and it sounded great. It's not very hard to do and worth a try. Yes you might loose some hp. It all depends what you want out of the bike. My friend wanted sound.

Siramazing,

Slip-on pipes are just the mufflers not the entire exhaust system. If you find something your wife likes then it could save you some money. Also, check out the spec's on the ones you're eyeballing just to be sure that's what you really want. After you install them their yours.

When you mess with your exhaust, you will need to adjust your carb to have better performance and vice versa. The dealer has is 1/2 right. You do loose some low end power, but at high speed there is no difference. Why do you think they call is DRAG PIPES-no baffles for racing.

On your bike, punched out baffles for V&H straight shots are just fine. Your bike probably has a little go to it. If you rejet and put in K&N high flow air filter, you will gain more HP. The previous owner may have already. Will you need a top end job sooner? NO, unless you ride it like you stole it and abuse the hell out of it. I'm beginning to wonder if your mechanic even knows what he is talking about. If you do regular oil change, you shouldn't have to do a top end for 60-100K. It really depends on the maintenance schedule. If nothing else, change the engine oil religiously--every 3K. In my opinion, you have a good set up and I wouldn't mess with it other than just enjoy riding it.

On your ol lady's sporty 06, is it fuel injected? You may have to re-map when you are going to do any modification. Slip-ons are much cheaper than full exhaust. Cost is all relative to the style that suits you. If you like the stock pipes, then just have the baffles removed. Much cheaper modification. Oh, and you can do it all by yourself and save the cost for other bling bling stuff for her.

You can buy the baffles for the V&H pipes from V&H or a dealer. It would be good to put them back in and they will still
be very loud even with the baffles in.

Without baffles you loose midrange torque . Your pipes are too free flowing and thus lack exhaust velocity ( mid range) . That is what help exhaust scavenging in the cylinder . Now those same pipes actually will increase horsepower but only at the top rpm range . Drag pipes will have a pronounce torque dip at mid range on a dyno chart .
These undersquare engines are designed for torque .

Well, he was talking about needing a top job down the road at over 60K, without the baffles, so I am assuming he feels the engine could easily go beyond that mileage if the baffles were in. My wifes's sportster has a carb. What she wants out of the pipes is the sound.
