I bought my 1/2 lid in 1986. I took out the liner, and took a die grinder & dremmel to the foam.
A few hours later, I had a custom fit bucket, and no mushroom head.
It will be on my melon tomorrow, and every day I ride.
It's no longer a helmet when you remove the foam that protects your head, it's now a hat. Same goes for a non DOT helmet. Just cause it looks like a helmet does not mean it will function like one, that's why we have helmet testing standards like DOT, EEC 22.05 and Snell M2010.

I read somewhere that Composite Craft bought the rights or technology that ACC used to make their helmets. They are not DOT certified but they do look good. http://www.headtriphelmets.com/index.php
Thanks for everyone's feedback. Don't know if I want to go monkeying around with the safety functions of a helmet, or get a novelty one, just for the looks. I need the last three cells left in my head if something were to happen.
I stopped in at the HD dealer the other day to look at what they had in stock, and the saleswoman there gave me the same kind of guidance - make sure I wear ear protection. This was before she gave me a disapproving look for even considering a half-helmet. Go figure...
Half helmets are noisy, look like hell, don't fit, choke you, move off your head at highway speeds...they suck
+1 on that. I have a HD Rally Rider Helmet (98200-04V). I don't use it much, but I have it. I usually wear a 3/4 Fulmer V2. I like this helmet way better. Just sayin.
I need to pick up a half helmet as well, I have heard good things about Fulmer and Bell Drifter for comfort and being the least "Mushroom" like helmets.
I've got a Scorpion EXO-100 for hot weather and am pretty happy with it. It has a removable ear skirt and has a built in visor that pops down when you need it.
