Looking at a FXDL - your thoughts?
Since its after the Holidays, we're looking at 2+ more months of winter and the economy is what it is, I figured there was no better time to look for a deal on my first Harley.
It's been a long time since I rode and while I won't say I have support, I've finally made it to the point where a bike won't lead to a divorce - so I'm trying to stick to a budget to be fair about it all. I started looking at 2007-2008 1200C, Nightsters and Dynas. Rode a bunch of bikes today. I'm not a little guy and, while the Sportys were fun, the Dynas were it.
I'm new here and I have a bunch of questions that I hoped you could help me with. I'm going to fire away, so answer all, one or none. Any advice is appreciated.
- I rode a 2006 Low Rider I really liked. Any advice on 88 Twin Cam vs. a 96? Is it likely to hold value against the newer engine?
- The bike has 14,000 miles on it. Seemed reasonable for 5 years old. The bike appears to have been well maintained and it's coming from a HD dealer. Any advice on what to watch our for? I've read A LOT of the forums, but I don't know what I don't know.
- Is there any meaningful difference between a Low Rider and a Super Glide. I did read about the small difference in the rake, but is it meaningful?
- I know I can probably get a better deal from a private sale but getting the title work and lien release done is a real hassle. Are there any other benefits from buying from a HD dealer? I also saw a trade in at a Yamaha dealer - opinions on buying from a non-HD dealer?
- Is there a major difference between 2006 and 2007 models that are really worth paying attention to?
- Finally, the dealer is asking $10,800 (before negotiation) for the bike pictured. 14,000 miles, well maintained, pretty much stock. Might need new tires before long. What do you think a reasonable offer would be?
Thanks in advance - vou

I've been looking at similar bikes in a similar price range and will probably be striking in January too when I have the $ together.
I don't think the differences between the Low Rider, the Super Glide, the SG Custom, and the Street Bob are meaningful in the way that you're talking about. The Low Rider is the most expensive of these-not sure that it would be justified, especially in terms of handling or anything.
Price-wise, I've been looking at private sales because I think you can get a newer, lower mileage Dyna for around 10K than that one. So I don't really know dealer prices other than that they're higher. I look at KBB and NADA and try to pay on the low end of those figures, given the season and the economy.
If you jump up to '07, you can get a bigger motor, also lower risk of some of the '06 mechanical issues. Do a search here under "IPB", or "stator" for the '06's and you learn about some pretty significant, but maybe not too common, issues such as the above, and the cam chain tensioners, I think.
The LR is my favorite of the bunch, but many of them are a little above my $10K price range, I find.

Like was said before, the '06 will eventually have problems with the inner primary bearing and the stator/rotor may grenade inside the primary. This was fixed in the '07 and later models. I have an '06 and have fixed both issues and have no worries about my bike at all. If you want the '06, I would get the dealer to agree in writing to fix both items when/if they go out.
The differences between the SG and Lowrider are cosmetic, mainly silver engine vs. black/chrome and the lowrider comes with a tach. Mechanically they are all Dyna's.

I would hold out for a '07 or newer. Bigger motor, better resale and less things you need to keep an eye on. Low Riders are a great choice. Blacked motors, all the chrome and a tach. Go for the '06 on downs if price is the major factor since you can usually get a better deal on them.
I have an 07. I stayed away from the 06 for the bearing-stator issue as well as getting another 8 CI, and 6 speed.
I bought mine from a dealer in early 09, it's an 07, and it had 2000 miles on it.
They were asking 14.5 for it, and I went out the door for 12.6.
I added the forward controls, pipes, SE air cleaner, and sepst and am into it for about 14.5 now.
Been a great bike, as I now have 17K miles on it, and we rode to Sturgis in a day (700 miles) quite comfortably.
My only gripe is the tires, (limited mileage) but thats more of a general manufacturing issue rather than an FXDL problem.
Its been in hybernation since the snow began and I stay away from it so as not to let my impatience get the best of me..........

One thing you can look forward to buying from an HD dealer is that you can get up to a 3 yr full coverage warranty. We just purchased an 07 FXDWG and for $1500 it is covered top to bottom minus maintenance items like brake pads, oil changes, etc. We didn't really talk them down much on price but got this thrown in for "free." I would look at an 07 up and really consider this peace of mind.
