Default Gloss Black Rear Strut Covers

Those with Fat Bobs who have changed the rear fender support/strut covers to gloss black, just how difficult is it to do? My primary concern is with the shock. Does the bike have to be jacked up and the shock totally removed to do the change? Also do you just unplug the wiring for the directional or is there something more to it? Thanks in advance for any info you can give me.

The bike must be jacked to remove the shocks. Then I am pretty sire you will need to remove the turn signal wiring from the tail light to get them out of the way.

First, don't let removing the shocks scare you, once you start doing it you will be just fine...just be organized and take your time.
The strut cover is just that, a cover. Take it off and it is gloss black underneith. It is way easy if you just do one side at a time, that way the fender does not need to be dropped. When doing the indicators, take off the brake light cover and disconnect the wire harness for each of the blinkers (follow there wires)...they are little clips...and then remove the wires from the little clamps on the inside of the fender. You want to put a jack under just to take the weight off of the shocks, i used my car jack...strategically placed of course. Loosen the bottom shock allen head pretty good and completely take the top shock nut off. You're going to have to remove the top of the shock from the shock mount in order to slide the strut cover off. Remember, if you do one side at a time, you don't have to drop the fender and it makes it a lot simpler. Then take off the bolts on the struts and remove the cover...put everything back but the cover and you're done. Hope this helps...and I don't think I forgot anything...good luck.

Go to my pictures and you can see my struts...that is what they look like under the covers. All in all it took me about 15-20 minutes.

Thanks for the responses guys. I just don't want the thing to fall apart when I take the shock off. The Dyna repair manual doesn't make mention of loosening the bottom shock nut at all but that didn't make any sense because the top has to be pulled away. And I wasn't expecting to have to disassemble the blinker. Plan it out and don't rush is good advice. Thanks again
