Default 10 WG: Rack vs. bags

I just purchased my fisrt HD a month ago and luv it...only problem I have is I need either a rack to tie down a bag or side bags. I'm not sure what I want but don't want to take away from the lines of the bike.

BLUF: I'm a female rider and would like to ride to work, but need something that I can fit a pair of shoes and purse in.

Welcome to the HD world! Before I bought detachable saddlebags for my Fatbob, I had a soft trunk bag that I strapped to the sissy bar sitting on a rack. I could still take it off easily when I wanted too. There are tons of vendors that sell cheap to custom leather for these...

I am in the same quandary and have decided on a sissy-bar and the seemingly really cool Multi-Fit Touring Luggage System With Day Pack (HD Part# 94734-09). It attaches to the sissy-bar. If anyone has the a review of this item that would be appreciated (as I haven't purchased them yet).

I had one of the sissy bar bags from Harley. It worked pretty good bus was kind of unsightly. It was one of the round bags. The word of caution I would have is that that nylon material will fade pretty quickly. It faded to a sort of dark purplish color in only a few months. Of course I ride to work every day so the bike sits out in the sun a lot. I got saddlebags and got rid of the sissy bar bag and I'm a lot happier with them. I also have the luggage rack and between it and the bags I can haul everything I need.

I'm leaning towards the saddlebags more than the rack/bag. Main goal is to not have anthing too big on the bike.

I've taken off the pax seat and have no need for it, not liking the sissy bar sitting so far back. Thinking of taking the sissy bar off and adding small saddle bags...any ideas/pics would be wonderful.

If you don't want to ruin the lines of the bike, the best way to go in my opinion is the quick detach sissy bar and luggage rack. Then get the T-Bag Helmet bag.

I'm biased, I'll admit since that is what I run on my Fat Bob, but it's easily removable and much cheaper than quick detach saddlebags. I can fit tool roll, rain gear, lunch and my work laptop in the main compartment, plus clears, phone, ipod, etc...in the side compartments.

Sorry, I just read your post that you're running solo. I'm thinking about building myself a solo quick detach backrest/luggage rack for my Fat Bob. I haven't done it yet, but it is certainly doable. There is no off the shelf system out there though.

I just don't want to run saddlebags.

I've got a buddy that has the Harley lockable leather versions on his Fatbob. They fit the tightest up against the fender and are a little smaller plus they lock! They look the best that I've seen. They look kinda OEM/orginal fit is what I'm saying. Most of the quick detach versions sit out from the bike. I had the big quick detach Harley leather back and quick detach sissy bar and it made for to much air space between the bags and the fender.

He has the stock seat that is really small on the back, so almost solo and no sissy bar most of the time.

Your at the point of is this good enough and if you don't go with what you really want you will kick yourself later for not spending just a bit more and not purchase twice. I've been there a million times! lol

I put on a fender rack made by Motherwell. Doesn't mess up the lines of the bike and is real functional. Most times I just bungee what I need to carry on the rack. When I need to carry more stuff I have a round T-bag which attaches nicely.

If I was always carrying things side saddle bags would make sense, but the fender rack seems to be perfect for my needs.

I went through the same dilemma for my 2010 Street Bob. Ended up getting some detachable Leather Pros bags. The main question you have to ask yourself is looks more important than functionality. I know most on the forum don't like bags on Dynas, but for me this made the bike way more functional for travel to work or small trips to the grocery store.
