Atfirst I always chalked it up to a faulty pipe..or two...or three then noted all of them had one thing in common and it was they were wrapped. When they broke and we unwrapped em you could see definate signs of excessive heat buildup in certain areas. Areas that would normally get some heat stress of course, but it was magnified and centralized by the wrap. The whole idea of the wrap is to keep exhaust heat (energy) inside the pipe which aids scavenging and velocity yadda yadda. That also keeps ALOT of heat inside what is notoriously a fragile pipe. Especially the thin walled primary tubes and where it necks down to the collector. I know it looks all hot-rod and ol school but there are some caveats to think about. Better alternatives for me at least would be to use the t-header heat shields or better yet have the pipe ceramic coated in either black or silver. It would add looks, performance and durability and keep you from potentially ruining a pretty expensive system.. Just my opinion, and you know what they say about those.
yeah but it looks so cool!!!!
nice job, bike looks awesome. btw, the DEI ties are crap. better with stainless hose clamps. thats what i used. they just complete the whole look.

Glad I found this thread, as I'm debating about whether or not to rewrap my pipes since I'm already having to repair and refinish them. Looks like you were able to wrap them while the pipes were on the bike, which is a plus for me.

Also, did you have any trouble getting that big lower clamp around the top header once the pipes were wrapped? It was near impossible to squeeze it in there once both pipes were wrapped when I did it a few years ago.

Hopefully someone can answer this one for me because I've never found a real answer to it. How is the top pipe wrapped without causing the space between the two headers to be too narrow for the big collector clamp? The last time I tried wrapping like this I started at the back of the collector and wrapped forward towards the front of the top header, but then I couldn't get the collector clamp between them so I unwrapped it and just did the headers, stopping before the clamp.

Do people wrap around the clamp so that there's actually no tape under it?

I got it wrapped under the clamp but it took some work and was much easier with the pipe removed. I had to pry the mounting bracket wider to get it on over the wrap and it closed tighter over the pipe when I bolted it on. I've wrapped my pipe twice now but inevitably the TH scrapes and destroys my neat wrap job. Ceramic coating and twisting solves the problem.
