Yea but fxd2003rider are the instructions you posted for the supposedly new and improved master cylinder cover and gasket?
If they really did improve it where it is easier to tighten down without it leaking I would spring some cash for it. As it is now I hate taking the cover off because it takes me a while to get it tightened down just right where it will stop leaking.
Its the paint itself that causes the leak. The paint is not compatible with the brake fluid (on the cap only) and the brake fluid is beeing absorbed through the paint. HD has updated the paint on the new caps to fix this problem or you can buff all the paint off to stop the leak or buy a chrome one. Its not the gasket thats the problem. Been there!
I bought a chrome cover the first time I took it off and couldn't get it to stop leaking. I tried to just buy the gasket but they didn't have any so I had to buy the whole chrome lid and gasket. Still have trouble getting it just the right tightness to make it stop leaking but I eventually get it right and it does stop.
The specified torque is so light on these it's kinda crazy.

My 2003 parts manual shows p/n 45005-96 for the gasket; more recent p/n is 45483-05...Not sure if this is the improved version though.
The torque on the screws is 6 in lbs, you can barely measure 6 in lbs.
I run the screws down to where they just start to tighten and then finger tight, just so the you see the gasket squish ever so slightly. So far so good. Also, I only fill the reservoir about 1/2 way, 1/4" below the full line.
