I highly recommend taking out the baffles. It's very easy to do. If you like it, fine. Keep it that way. If you don't like it, you can always get another set of mufflers from someone who is selling their takeoff after putting on aftermarket pipes. And, if you are like me, you'll be so disappointed with the sound of the stock mufflers and the sound with the baffles removed that you'll get motivated to buy some aftermarket pipes. You really can't lose by trying it.
I drilled a hole right through the baffles and it sounds awesome! Thanks guys. I spent probably about 20$ on a drill bit long enough and some wd40. I took off the mufflers to make sure all the metal flakes were out and then put it back on and cranked her up. It was amazing. I am going to try to post the video of the before and after.
That is great...look it's not like you're destroying something that you can't fix for cheap....hell if you want to go back you can get a welding shop tobrazed it shut...
Hey Ft. Bliss,
Have you been out riding since punching out the plug? Just curious if you noticed
any loss of low end torque that folks speak of. I am looking forward to hearing your sound clips when you get them posted.
Thanks for your service, I was at the Academy (1SG course) in the late 80's.
You can get a really nice low deep tone from stock mufflers if you remove the guts. It isn't hard. Get a 1 3/4 inch hole saw, take the mufflers off and drill from the back side in. There are two layers you will have to go through. After getting through the second layer, take a pair of long nose pliers and work the baffle out. You will be suprised at the difference in tone. Probably wise to put a little richer jet in the carb after doing this. The dealership can guide you what size you will need, depending on the year of your scooter.
