I have a 2000 FXD that I just put a new rear tire on. I went to mount it back onto the bike this afternoon, and noticed what I think may be a problem. Per the manual, when looking facing the rear of the bike, I installed the wide axle spacer on the left, and the narrower spacer on the right. The right spacer has a groove, so I faced that towards the hub.
Here's my problem - there is still room between the spacers and the swing arm. Aren't the spacers supposed to take up the whole gap and not expose any of the axle? It seems like the spacers could just slide along the open axle space. I took the wheel off a couple of week ago, got sidetracked by work, and now coming back to it, can't remember what it looked like before. I don't have any "extra" parts. I'm stumped. I have a solid rear wheel, and I'm not sure what bike the PO installed it from. If this is how the PO had it installed, I guess it's OK, as I didn't have any problems before taking off the wheel, but I want to make sure I'm not missing anything.
Ummm.... I will now respond to my own question with a great deal of embarrassment. I forgot to install the rear caliper - that took up the rest of the axle space. DOH!
