Lots of good replies.
I will pass on the slip ons.I may ride the bike stock and put a
full set of pipes on my self.I am used to V&H Powershots on
my present bike,a Vulcan 2000 and like the sound(not too loud
when cruiseing the back roads but still require earplugs)
I am starting to like the V&H BSS,just wondering what they sound like compared to the Powershots?
I like the idea of having the stock pipes "on hand"at the house in case the laws change and force me back to catalytic converter pipes,is that even possible?
thanks for the feedback
I didn't know squat about all this when I got my FXD but I installed the Big Sucker, Fuelpak, and mufflers myself and I'm not overly mechanically inclined. Just gotta get the tools.
Don't do slip on's... you'll be sorry. Wait and do a full set of pipes, open a/c, fuel managemnt system and a a full dyno tune all at once when you can afford it. I did mine before I picked the bike up and never regretted it.
Wrong. To get the best out of it go with either S & S slash cuts or Rush slip ons. Air cleaner and tuner are your choice but changing from the stock header pipes is a backward step. I have a set of S & S slash cuts on my 07 fxd and have tried V & H short shots and big shots. The loss of power and torque with the V & H pipes is very obvious without any need to do a dyno test. Do some research and you will find the best bang for your buck in terms of an exhaust system will be the stock headers with slip ons. The balance pipe on the original headers is needed for scavenge effect. If you want to get really technical do some research into reverse pressure wave dynamics and it will become obvious why drag pipes ( which is what most aftermarket really are ) are a waste of money.
I seem to do everything opposite of everyone else. I did the air cleaner and download first, with stock pipes. HUGE difference in how the bike ran. I rode like that for about a year. Then I added slip ons. I like the sound better but the big change in performance was the air cleaner, not the pipes.
OK, can someone break this down for me as a new noob in the H-D world and getting ready to buy my first Harley.
1: what the hell is the download that everyone is talking about?
2: what is stage 1? is there some order i should be changing things out?
3: all i was planning for upgrades in the 1st year of the bike was grips, pegs, and handlebars and let the bike break itself in first before adding any serious hardware. does that sound smart?
4: As a common sence person im thinking when i start serious upgrades i would go with full exhaust pipes and not slips ons because slips ons are for just sound and with a full exhaust upgrade i would get better sound and more horsepower...... is that wrong?
Zac, the download does a similar thing to what the add on tuners do, only much more limited. If you you change to a high flow air cleaner the computer needs to be re-calibrated to adjust for the extra air, or the bike will run to lean. The download is the Harley dealers answer to this, but it will only adjust enough for an air cleaner and pipes. If you want to mod your engine in the future you need to go to something with more adjustability like a power commander.
Stage 1 just means upgraded air cleaner and pipes.

So i just cant add a new exhaust and airfilter myself and run with it. i have to go to the dealer and get them to re-calibrate the system after i do this?
Whats the power commander?
sorry i would buy the manual for the bike im planning to get i just havent decide yet on which dyna to buy. but most likely the fxdWG.

I ran my bike for about 200 miles before going with any mods. At 200 miles i did rush slipons , screaming eagle ac, and stage 1 download from the stealership. When i got this put on it just felt like the bike is breathing much better. Before it was like a muzzle over your face, now its like an open mouth. I went for slipons so it would sound more like a Harley not a Honda, and I didnt want to loose any fuel economy. I have heard many stories that with a full exhaust system and a power commander you will loose some fuel economy. I know there will be some that say you dont but i have heard you do. Also I didnt want it to be to loud thus the reason for slipons. For me , for now , it was worth it.
