Does your state have a stupid handlebar height rule, here in LA the law is 15" over the seat, my factory many apes bust that, luckily it is not enforced as it was probaby written back in the old flat seat jap bike days. I think the shoulder height law is best if their has to be one. To put a specific inch requirement isnt fair 15" may be comfortable for some and still suck for others like me.
I work for LAPD (civilian though) and catch grief from the guys all the time about my 12.5 apes. They say the law in Ca is that they can't be over your shoulder, but then again, I have gotten a few diff stories. Truth is, if you are riding around like a knucklehead, they will enforce whatever they want to. I have never had to pull the "get out of jail cuz I work with cops" card yet, I just keep my rpm down around the donut shops.
I've always heard the "shoulder" law here in NJ. I'll be honest...I love the mini-apes, stock on a wide glide. When those bars are setup in a way in which the bars are in a straight line with the forks (basically stock position), it's absolutely the perfect position for me. I couldn't be more comfortable. Anything taller just doesn't do it for me. I have seen bikes where some taller apes look cool, but when I see a guy riding with his arms straight up in the air, I just don't get it. Regardless of what might or might not look cool....that riding postition just looks torturous to me. But hey...to each his own....that is, until your own is illegal
South Dakota has a law that states "32-20-3. Required handlebar height--No person may operate on a public street or highway a motorcycle equipped with a handlebar positioned so that the grips of the handlebar are at or above shoulder height of the person when sitting astride the seat. A violation of this section is a petty offense."
I wonder how many people go to Sturgis without knowing this.
Hey Dave, Every once in awhile
the Alton cops will ticket people
for that crap. I don't understand
it, since it's the bikers that keep
a lot of the business going up there.
I'm actually amazed that i'm left alone as much as i am when i'm riding my bike. My pipes are loud and a rev the motor often, at chicks and what not and always go 5-10 mph over the speed limit. I had a CHP on a bike pull up next to me at a light about 3 weeks after i bought my bike asking when i had bought it cause it still had the paper dealer plate on it, but he didn't pull me over. I get pulled over more other in my Security car at night, the cops in the down that i patrol in like to pull over and f*** with security gaurds and taxi drivers at night. I'm the last year and a half, i got a ticket for speeding, doing a cali stop at a stop sign, and the most recent was for no seat belt which i found out cost $90 now. I hate seat belts, that why i love riding my bike....
Califonia handlebar law as found on the AMA website. A person shall not drive a two-wheel motorcycle that is equipped with handlebars so positioned that the hands of the driver, when upon the grips, are more than six inches above his or her shoulder height when sitting astride the seat. That is what it should be like in every state. Who is it that really cares how high my handlebars are on capitol hill or wherever they are? I mean really? I don't measure the space between your legs and your steering wheel so don't bother me.
