Default Progressive suspension 412 issue

I installed progressive fork springs month ago and I was happy with it so I decided to install rear shocks also. Finally I installed new shocks yesterday. I was excited so I jumped on the bike to check how I feel new shocks. I was disappointed it's too soft. It is 13 inches shock but when I'm sitting on the bike it's compressed to 11-11.5 inches. It looks like I have lowered suspension when I’m sitting on bike. I think something is not right there. I tried on the highest preload setting and it’s kinda acceptable but still it’s not what I looked for because it’s still softer than stock ones.

I’m 210 lbs and usually ride solo. I’ve ordered Standard Duty.

Shocks model: Progressive Suspension 412 Series Shocks - Sportster, Dyna Models [Chrome Standard 13] PS-412-4008C

Is it normal behavior for that shocks? Who has the same configuration? How your shocks do work for you?

P.S. I will try to reinstall it again today. Maybe I missed something when was installing it. The installation documentation is poor. I still don’t understand how the same shocks can work for Sportster and Dyna at the same time. The weight of motorcycles is different.

It has 5 adjustable settings. It changes the characteristic of shocks but still on the highest preload setting it's softer then stock shocks.

I'm 215 and run my 12" 412 HD's on the second click, there isn't much sag and anything more is too stiff when I'm solo.

Hey Nick!

Go to the Progressive Suspension website to verify your part #; I saw the 412-4008 listed for Sporties and FXRs only, not Dynas (yours is a '94, right?), possibly resulting in different spring rates. Shock bodies are most likely the same, might check with mfr and inquire about a spring swap.

I had the exact opposite experience with my 412s - I ordered std duty for my F-Bob and found they were much too stiff, even at the lowest setting. Ended up putting the stockers back on and bumping up the preload.

YES!! I had the same issue! I wound up sending my shocks back to progressive. I spoke at length with Justin Barber. They were the wrong shocks in the correct box. Progressive took care of everything as well as building me my new shocks in there shop to my specs. Contact them first before you give up.

Thank you! Definitely the issue is shocks model number. It's just for FXR and Sportys. I was on call with representative of webstore, they are confirmed the mistake. I'm going to send it back. Unfortunately there is not available 13 inches Progressive 412 shocks for my Dyna.

I just installed a set of Works streettrackers 12.6" and took a ride tonight ,
they are great! Love them.
they came set on the highest setting and I softened them 2 1/2 turns.
Nice ride, a tad higher than stock and very comfortable.

Default Shocks for FXDC

I hava 2009 FXDC that I bought off of E-bay in December with 500 miles on it. The stock shocks are so hard that it rides like a hard tail. I have been reading all of the posts about pulling on air shocks off of a dresser & have been bidding on some on E-bay, but Daytona is coming up in a week and I don't want to leave with experimental shocks.

I also own a 1973 R 75/5 BMW, the shocks ride good. I almost forgot that I also have a wrecked R 65/7 BMW for parts. I pulled the shocks off (which had been replaced by the prior owner with a set of IKON 7610-1427) which were designed for the R 65 which is about 150-200 lbs lighter than the FXDC. The shocks were 13 inches long & the mount holes were about 1/32 inch to small. I drilled them out & installed them. My weight is 175 pounds and will be riding solo, the bike sets down to about normal height when I set on it & it rides good. I have road it about 200 miles & plan to ride a couple hundred more before leaving for Daytona. There might be a handling problem at high speeds but it handled fine at 85 on the freeway. The I-16 near here is cement with rough joints.
