Default Welder advice

Ok I would like to buy a little mig welder for projects, looking at the 115v range welders. Does anyone have a eastwood, hobart, nothern, or any other brand and how much do you like it. Yeh its not directly bike related but it will be used for bike projects and most advice I get here is good.

I dont know of many tig welders that run on 110 or can be had for a similar budget.

That being said. I have a 110v Lincoln electric and for a little machine, it works very nice.

Good advice! A Lincoln or Miller will probably outlast you. This is definetely a case of "You get what you pay for". I used a wire feed in my trade almost every day and the Miller never failed me!

I have this also, minus the bottles. It's about the best you can do on a 110V outlet.

I have owned a Lincoln SP180 MIG for 20 years (220 volt plugs into the dryer outlet), use it all the time, never had one lick of trouble. I call it my metal caulking gun.

I have a Hobart Handler 140 and a Hobart Champion Elite. I have used that 140 more times than I can remember with no problems what so ever. Hobart is top of the line right along with Lincoln and Miller. As a matter of fact when you buy a Hobart it will have Miller parts all over it. For example the Hobart mig welders such as the Handler 140 comes with a Miller gun. One think to know though. Don't waste your time welding with the flux core wire. Go ahead and get a bottle of the appropriate gas for what you will be welding and weld with solid wire.

1st, don't limit yourself to 115V--get a 220V machine.

And consider a TIG/stick welder, instead of the MIG, much more versatile and capable of much better looking welds, especially on thinner materials. The newer briefcase-size inverter-types are way more efficient. Either way, you (generally) need to spend $1,000, or more, for a good used one. If you just gotta have MIG, the Miller 251 is a benchmark, and can sometimes be found used for ~$1,000-$1,500. In TIG, there are some under-$1k imports that have received good reviews. Eastwood?? Northern?? Avoid the HF crap. Seek: Miller, Lincoln, Hobart.

Check some of the welding forums.
