? about primary fluid for 06 Dyna
I know a guy where I work that can run some pretty hi-tech test on oil, he said that he would test it for me if I would bring some samples of fresh oil and used oil. I am going to do this the next time I change the engine oil. I am curious to see just how much the oil is breaking down from one oil change to the next.
hummm,...... those results would be kinda interesting,.....
I did read on the bottle of the Mobil1 v-twin 20w50 that its recommends it in the engine, primary and even in the tranny of air cooled v-twins. Well,... I did put it back in my engine and primary and went again with the Mobil1 synthetic 75w90 in the tranny. I showed the bottle to my indy tech and all he said was, "Well I'll be darn".

I run M1 20w-50 in the engine
M1 75-90w in tranny
Valvoline 20w-40 in primary
I use regular old valvoline based on what others have said. "It is possible syns may be too slippery for the clutch plates. Some folks actually use ATF in the primary. If you don't experience slippage, I assume any oil would be okay.
Ironically ExxonMobile recommends their V-Twin 20w-50 syn in the tranny, not 75-90w (interesting).
Has anyone considered going with Mobile Delvac syn trans fluid in the tranny?? Caterpillar uses it in their extended service programs for heavy equipment.
This all gets pretty confusing, and I would go back to HD products in my 06 Dyna if their syn3 didn't make so much noise in the tranny, and engine. Had them put it in at 1000 mile service, and I took it out at 3000.
M1 quieted the entire drivetrain tremendously.

Don't know when this is dated but looks like Harley says you can put Syn3 in everything. Does it come in different weights? Haven't been there to look yet. Here is the link.

Thank God as much time isn't wasted talking about what fluids people put in their cars than what to put in their bikes.
Here's are my selections:
Castrol 20w-50 dino in the engine, 4.99 a quart
Rotella 70w-90 synthetic in the tranny, free ( same oil as I run in the 18 wheeler trannie kindly provided by work)
Here's the one that likely freak the **** outta a lot of you
Pennzoil 10w-40 dino in the primary. WHAT?!!!!

I use HD 20W50 in the engine, and Formula+ in the transmission and the primary as per owners manual, no problems as of yet.

Whoever told you that sythetic oil is "slicker" is an idiot.
As far as what to use in your bike, I only have an opinon on one thing, and that is the tranny. After trying syn3 in the tranny, I am back to the formula+. The syn3 is just too light, the tranny is noisier with it, and the tolerances in the tranny are just not set up for that light of an oil.
As far as the engine and primary, I haven't had any trouble running syn3 in either one. If your primary is slipping with syn3, then there is something else wrong besides the oil.
