I have read just about every thread on here that I could find about what primary fluid would be best in the 06 Dynas and have seen totally opposite responses. I had my dealer put the syn3 in the motor and tranny and the Formula+ in the promary when I had my 1000 mile service done, and immediately my tranny started slipping so I then just decided to change up all the fluids at the recommendation of alot of posts that I have seen on here. I switched to Mobil1 V-twin 20w50 in the motor and primary and went with Mobil1 synthetic 75w90 gear oil in the tranny. I have appx 3000 miles on all of the Mobil1 fluids and I havent noticed any clutch slippage or really any negative effects, but I went to have my local independant authorized Harley mechanic to do my 5000 mile service and I provided him the fluids which was all the Mobil1 products that I had been using and he stated the following. He said that those Synthetics were just too slick for Harley engines but that I could probably get by with the Mobil1 in "JUST" the engine but that I was asking for serious trouble by putting the Mobil1 20w50 in the Primary because of the clutch and also by putting the 75w90 gear oil in the tranny. I'm looking for some honest answers on this issue. I havent seen much on this forum that directly relates to the new 06 and later Dynas except people stating that they wouldnt use the same thing in the new Dynas as in the pre 06 and 07 versions.
The Indy if full of crap. I have used Mobil1 75-90 in my 1988 FLHS tranny for over 160,000 miles. I also put it into my '06 FXDI. The primary is another matter. Untill I get more info on Harley's Primary+ fluid, that is what I am putting into my primary.
Amsoil has a chart: http://www.amsoil.com/products/stree...oil_chart.aspx
and states that it recommends MCV 20-50 into everything.
Now you can believe Amsoil, your tech, Harley or others, so you're back at square one and the $64,000 question is "who to believe"?
I have Syn3 in all holes and don't have any slippage, maybe you need an adjustment.
Hummm,...... Thanks for the replies and I know that this subject has really been beat to death but you hear so many different answers. I really never had any problems with the Mobil1 fluids that I'm using. I was just concerned about using the Mobil1 20w50 in the primary, after what he had said. I've seen where many on here use the Mobil1 20w50 in the engine and the 75w90 in the tranny, but was still a lil cloudy on which primary fluid.
I really didn't know what to use either. When I changed my fluids, I went with the SE syn3. It is 10 something a quart. I use and think amsoil is the best. I use it in my car. My father uses mobile in his bikes and cars and I will let ya know what he does for primary. I will be switching to either amsoil or mobile after the first year. Just giving HD a chance w their oils.

One nearby dealer gives two prices for the 1000 mi. service. One price for regular oil and another higher price for synthetic oil. My question is, why does the dealer give options? Shouldn't they know which oil is best for the motorcycle? The price difference is only about 20 or 25 bucks. I think it is about 250 for regular oil and 275 for synoil. If the synoil is so much better, why do they even offer the other oil? I intend to ask when I bring it in and will post their answer.
How could oil be too slick? If thats the case then you have a film of oil between all metalic serfaces. Wear would be nonexistent. That would be perfect lubrication.
1. No such thing as "too slick" motor oil. That's an old wives tale propagated by the dealership to get you to buy their products. Use any quality full synthetic - Mobile 1, Redline, Amsoil, Royal Purple. Syn3 is not a full synthetic.
2. Your bike came from the factory with Formula+ in the primary. Putting fresh fluid in there won't cause it to slip.
3. I wouldn't use gear oil in the trans. The new 6 speed transmissions are a whole new animal from previous transmissions. Like new car transmissions, the old way of thinking doesn't cut it. Would you put gear oil in your T5? I wouldn't. Stick with Formula+ until more information is available.
