Just as a side note, Syn 3 was made for engine, primary and tranny. Whether it works well or not, that is why it is called Syn 3. Even though the tranny may sound louder, it probably is giving the same amount of protection to the tranny, just noisier because it is lighter.

I don't care what they formulated it for. If the tolerance in the tranny is set up for 80 90 weight, and you put a lighter weight oil in it, you're just asking for trouble.
One thing for sure, the tranny will last at least a couple years with whatever oil you use, and that is all the MOCO gives a damn about. By the time it beats the gears and bearings to death, it's your baby.
Sorry about the broken link above. I guess I am just computer stupid. Anyways I just copied and pasted it below. It can be found in the DIY section under drivetrain, primary, and trans section. posted by TCSTD in Feb............................
"Here's a test that you syn 3 guys can do to tell you something about syn 3 in the trans. and how well it works for you.
When you drain the trans oil (syn 3) look at the magnet on the plug and see how much ferrous metal is on there in the form of fuzz. If you want proof once and for all how well syn 3 lubes the trans, switch to Mobil 1 75/90 or redline shockproof heavy this oil change and next oil change notice how much fuzz is there then when you dump this out next time. Granted there will be some left in the case from the last oil change using the syn 3 but there will be almost nothing. NEXT oil change after you have run the better oil in the trans for a few thousand miles, drain it again and see if you find anything on the plug at all. I've done this and one thing I know for sure is that less fuzz = less wear. It's GEAR MATERIAL guys WEAR on the gears! Would you be concerned at all to see this much fuzz in the engine? Why is it OK in the trans?
There's been a number of transmission bearings going bad all using syn 3 oil and shifter forks blued because of poor lubrication with syn 3 . Your bike your choice here.
The 06 bikes no longer advise use of Syn 3 in the trans from HD, wonder why?
They recommend the formula + for the primary and the transmission now, but IMO, it has to fall short in one area, I feel the transmission because of the severe service encountered with the gears just as the Syn 3 did when used in the transmission.
The dealers are pushing syn 3 because they sell it and make money doing it. Your warrantee will be over in most cases when the trans takes a dump."
Here's what I do know, while it is not technical, it is from experience......At 5,000 miles I switched to Redline 20w50 in the engine, Redline Shock Proof Heavy in the tranny, and Redline Mtl...in the primary I noticed a significant difference in the motor running cooler. With the regular harley oil, the motor ran hotter and the engine would "ting "ting" ting" for 15 minutes after cooling down. With Redline, that does not happen....In the tranny, the "clunk" is gone and the downshifting and upshifting is much smoother....Well with the primary I don't notice a difference other than it works fine.......
Now I am not saying that Redline is better than any other synthetic, because I know nothing about petroleum products, I am not an engineer.... Just my .02

If you ride your bike where temps are above 75 Degrees F. I think the Mobil 1 gear lube will be fine, but if you ride at temps where you don't burn off the condensation in the gear lube, you may want to stick with Foumula Plus. Harley's gear lube smells like it contains Latex. Most gear lubes sontain sulfur as an anti wear agent, along with other hi pressure additives. Sulfur and water could convert to sulpheric acid. ANY Experts on this please reply. Those of us in the Northern U.S. who ride into early winter would like to know.
