I like the softail custom-like it alot, but it doesn't compare to the ride on a WG. I still prefer the front end on the Dyna. Moreover, I do most of my riding solo and prefer the custom solo seat I have put on my WG. You won't be able to switch between a two up and solo seat on the softail custom.
Lastly, I wouldn't trade the "vibe" of my WG for anything else. I like the feel of my engine. Once you get going it's as smooth as silk. If I had to do it all over again for an 07 model I would still buy a WG. About the only softail model I might consider would be a Heritage Classic-but that is a totally bike and something I might get when I'm over 60 years old.
You can't go wrong with either bike, but I like the look and feel of the WG.
I've got a Deuce and my buddy a Wide Glide. The bikes are similar in weight, rake, length, etc. We both tend to be two of the quicker riders in our group and both seem to allow a good amount of go.
I think the custom is very much like the Deuce with the stardard fender, no? You can't go wrong with either.

Yea, I'd think that the difference in ride is small enough that a new seat, handlebar, and/or new suspension will make them pretty much equal. You can't really tell a difference of an inch here or there frame wise. The big difference is look, so just buy whatever you like looks better.
Thanks, everyone, so much. Your replies have been very helpful. Based on my first impression plus your input, I'm definitely leaning towards the WG. One more question - don't go off on me too much - I've never ridden a Fat Boy. I sat on one yesterday, and the fit wasn't bad. Just wondering if I should even consider that - are the wide tires an advantage - less likely to loose traction on gravel?
Sorry, I really am not that familiar with the different bikes. I'm not a Harley fanatic. I just like to ride!
Okay, this should be interesting! Don't worry, I think I'll get a WG. It fits me well and looks great.
That was fast! I don't think a sat on a Street Bob. It looked like I would be cramped, i.e. couldn't stretch my legs out enough.
So much to figure out! For a long time, I thought I'd go from my Sportster to an Ultra Classic, but the riding I'm doing, and mostly solo, doesn't make sense. I ride back roads, and I have a gravel road and driveway.
