Powder Coating Pipes
I currently have V&H staggered shortshots on my '10 W.G. However, this is not the exhaust that i really want, but was what i had available in the cash department when the bike got hit and had to replace the exhaust. Looking at a 2-1 system for mine, but i am getting off track here.
My wife has a '10 Street Bob. Denim black, with pretty much all the chrome minus the exhuast, shocks, handlebars and forks being removed and replaced with power coated and wrinkle black. (thats the way she wants it, i myself prefer the chrome)
She likes my exhaust, so my plan is to possibly take my exhaust off and get it powercoated and slap them on her bike and get the set i want for mine, you know 2 birds with one stone. First and foremost i have never seen powercoated pipes close up, nor do i know about the lasting effect. Im sure thats not in question because i have had engine blocks done before.
So my questions for Joe and those with the knowledge. Can the powder coat color be made to match the bike? Average cost it would take to do a set of pipes, and maybe handlebars and shocks and lower forks.... ALso every powercoating shop in the country says they will do bike parts, but is there any particular thing to ask for and/or stay away from?
Much appreciated! Sorry for the long windedness!
They have about 4000 miles on em since getting powdercoated and I have no issues with them still look like when i got them minus a few scratches that were my fault.
Im sure a good powder coated could match the pipes really close to any color you want, mine were made to match my bars, horn cover, and upper belt guard and you cant tell any difference.
Im sure Joe will be able to give you a much better answer but I hope this helps.
I have had some shops say that doing a gloss, however, will be a problem at high temps. But i do believe Joe has gloss pipes and he can obviously give you the final verdict on that one
on a side note that doesn't pertain to your pipes...One woman at a powdercoating company said that mufflers like the ones on my V&H longshots (the head pipes have shields and then there are seperate "muffler" pipes that make up the second/back half of the exhaust) can't be powdercoated and need to be ceramic coated. However, contrary to that one shop it seems the general concensus is that mufflers can be powdercoated. The only areas that can't be are areas that get hot enough to "blue" such as the head pipes.
