The only negative is I scrape the heel of my boot (and scare the $hi@ out of myself) when riding the twisties but I am starting to get used to that. All in all I am very happy with them.
I am a new rider and got my first bike (FXDWGI) about a month ago, after taking the MSF course.
The course used a 125 cc Jap bike with mid controls and my WG has the forward controls. I can tell you my new WG is much easier to ride than that small bike and I find the forward controls a natural feel, kind of like a car because your foot controls are with your legs out somewhat. If that makes any sense. I am 6' 190 lbs..
I rode my FXDLI for over 1000mi with the center controls mainly because I was used to them from dirt riding. Then I switched to forward controls and I like them much better.
I like the mid controls on my FXDL so that I can put my feet up front on the highway pegs w/o any foot controls getting in the way. I also like being able to put my feet on the mid pegs to change my possition on longer rides.
I prefer the mid controls, I've been riding sportbikes for 15 years and I have to have my feet in a good control position. Plus I like being able to stand up on the pegs if I want to. The faster you ride the more it is important to use your legs in being able to turn the bike, having your feet underneath you gives you the ability for more leverage.
But I did install highway pegs with heel rests so I can change my foot position for when I am touring and want to stretch my legs.
I'm probably going to add forward controls here soon, just curious, how many of you switched the inner primary cover to get rid of the little knod that sticks out?
I have an 05' wideglide with factory forwards and I really like them. I must admit that I'm not used to them yet. I still hunt for them on occasion when taking off from a stop, but once I get going they feel so natural. My only concern is if my foot would accidently slip off. That would be an ugly situation. I will eventually install a pair of heal rests.
