Not sure on which way to go for wheel upgrade on my '04 Superglide. 19 x 2.5 front, 16 x 3.0 rear. Are 60 or 80 spoke wheels much stronger than 40? How much heavier? Where to buy? Would cast chrome be easier to maintain?
I found that DNA (some people love them some don't) make narrow glide rims with a 1 inch bearing for the sportster...they also fit the narrow dyna. I bought an 80 spoke 21 inch front for my bike (needed a front tire anyway) and it was about $150 less than the DNA web page wants for it. But DNA does sell a 40 60 and 80 in both 19 and 21 they don't say what bearing but I think u just ask for it. Their web page lists the parts for the sportster...but I spoke to a real LIVE person who says they sell them to narrow dyna guys all the time. Here is the link. If you look hard online you can get one of these cheaper than directly from DNA http://www.trydnastore.com/searchresults.asp?cat=104
Now its up to you what you like....I like the spoke front...but when its all said and done I have seen the chrome dyna wheels and they look nice. However for our bikes its about the same price to do spokes or chrome the originals. If we had 3/4 bearings we could get some cheap deals on a front wheel but we don't.
Spokes are hard to clean...really hard on the back. But they look GOOD.
My spoke wheels were a PITA to keep clean. Finally I sent a set of cast wheels to ChromeProsPlating in TX and had them chromed. Smartest thing I've ever done. They are a breeze to keep lookin' good, and they have held up great. 3+ years and no chips, pealing, or cracking. Plus it was only $550 for both wheels. How you gonna beat that?
I think I may have to go with the chrome cast, but the 80 spokes do look sweet, especially twisted ones. I live in an apartment so the bike stays on the street, covered and locked, but the wheels do get pretty dirty.
Next question: Where to buy? Did my Ebay search and there are a few vendors, two in So Cal, one in TX. All three touting their exceptional chroming process, three different prices. Recommendations?
