I'm with you on this Bill. Harley goes to great pains to print a book up that instructs you how to break in your bike when you buy it. For that matter they even give you a tape to watch. Why in the world would you do it any other way.

Doing the service yourself does not void the waranty.
That's not what my owners manual says. This is what the people who are holding my warraty say:

The performance of new motorcycle initial service is required to keep your new motorcycle warranty in force and to assure proper emissions system operation.
TCSTD,

Any way I look at this at 24 MPH in 3 rd gear under 1800 rpm's ,you are doing more damage to this engine than good! You can look foward to problems with the lower end with this proceedure JMHO
Does lugging the engine once or twice during break-in do more damage than lugging the engine one or twice after break-in? Or does periodic lugging of the engine lead to problems?

1200

Lugging is lugging any way you look at it and is not good for your engine regardless. Just imagine the force exerted on the crank when the gas mixture ignites and forces the connecting rod down. Now if the crank is spinning up a bit , this force is translated into a reciprocal motion as opposed to a slow moving crank (ie lugging) where the force exerted by the connecting rod is forced more in a downward motion acting against the crankpin and exerting much more force downward than when it is spinning up a bit. Make sense??

Picture when you lug an engine , the vibration you feel (that hard banging)when you do it, that is the downward force I speak of here that has the distructive nature for your engine.

Low rider There is no problem using Syn oil in your bike. I don't like syn 3 but that's another post, but please take it out of your tranny and put some good gear oil in it. Mobil 1 ,Redline, Hd tranny oil. Syn oil is to thin for trannys. Plus you are paying way to much money for it. This is JMO but I always use Mobil1 V-twin in the motor, Mobil 75-90 in the tranny and HD primary oil in the primary.

Low Rider, I am new to the group but by no means new to bikes. The Syn oil is not a problem at any miles. You can drain and install Syn oil the second you get the bike. However I do have to agree with RK and TC with this one. GET THE SYN OUT OF THE TRANNY! NOW! Not yelling just a suggestion
THere have been numerous reported problems with syn in the tranny. Aside from that tranny fluid or most of it is a semi synthetic blend anyway but you need to and must run the right grade of oil in there if you plan on owning this bike for a while. Secondly, why would anyone in their right mind put high dollar synthetic oil in the primary when you could essnetially pee in there and do about as much good as putting syn in there. The oil is only to lube and cool the chain and gears. The clutches are a wet or dry clutch so no problem with them. You can run just some straight 30 weight oil in the primary and be ahead of the game and have everything you need in there and save a lot of beer money.
I hate oil threads but I guess they are a necessary evil for the ill informed.
Sounds Like we have a Viking Choppers guy here on the board. Also sounds like I am new and about to get the boot already for chimming in on this one. LOL
Sorry no flaming I am just amused at the post by the Mechanic dude. Guy you have some good issues and points but sounds like you need to get your stories straight. These people are sharp and don't seem to forget much so beware the posts and remember what you say or it will bite you.

I didn't know how to add the fancy quotes but this is mine and I live by it. " Life is to short to dance with Ugly People". SpiderJim.
P.S. my 04 Rk with 7200 miles that Rk101 helped put about 1500 of them on for me this spring just got it's first does of Amsoil. Also if you don't think Motorcycle oil isn't important then read some oil company reports on air cooled engines and the life blood that keeps them smiling.
