Finally bought my dream bike, a "new to me" '05' wide glide, love the bike but have a couple "newb" questions.
1. I have all the old service records and the 10,000 mile service was done in the end of '09', the bike now has approx. 12,600 miles. Sooo.....when will I need to do another service?
2. Its (the service statement) hard to read but I am pretty sure the last service was done with synthetics, Sooo.....will I have to use synthetics or can I go back to dyno oil?
3. Bike runs like a bat out of hell but I notice a ticking sound coming from the left side, seems to appear after the bike warms up and gets fast or slower along with the motor. Is this normal? I have had a couple metrics over the years and none were this loud engine wise. But considering the way the bike was maintained by the previous owner I suspect it is "normal".
4. Any quirks I should know about with this model bike/motor? As far as I can tell besides a K&N filter and Screamin eagle pipes all is stock.

Thanks for any and all info!!!!!
1. Just change the crankcase oil and filter. Some other things might have dried up, so also lube your cables and pivot points if you notice any resistance.
2. Stay with synthetics, they are better in every way for a broken in engine. It's your choice.
3. Might be a loose bolt somewhere. Take your time and retorque your fasteners, just do a quick run over all the bolts. If a bolt seems loose, look up its torgue specs and tighten it accordingly. Run your hand around the areas of the noise when the bike is running. Might be nothing, my bike makes some noise, too. It might be something as simple as a loose bracket.
Congrats on the new bike, enjoy! Do yourself a favor and get a service manual, it will tell you what needs to be serviced and when. Now where's the pics! lol
#3 make sure you're using premium gas. Lower octane might cause a tick
+1 on the high octane gas. I have an 07 Wide Glide and it will tick if I have to use regular gas. You might want to change the oil depending on how long it sat before you got it. Other then that there are no quarks to worry about. These are great bikes, you'll love it.
Yea, I had the tick also a lot of people say it sounds like a sewing machine. The 'tick' I'd say is 'normal' for the synthetic fluid. Ive been using full synthetic since the 1st service 35,000 miles ago. I started using Lucas full synthetic additive (8oz) on the third or fourth oil change and the 'tick' was virtually eliminated.
