Default "Stage-1", anybody have a simple definition? And, '1000 mile break in'?

Gang...

1. New VH Big Shots are in, as is intake. It seems for as many google results there are on 'stage-1' there are opinions as to what this really means. Am I missing something here? IS stage 1 the replacement of pipes, intake and getting the performance upgrade (download) from the dealer? And/or is there some other type of steps or upgrade I need to take/perform before adding the pipes, intake and download?

2. My bike is new, has only about 400 miles. Again, getting mixed signals/answers, even from the stealer, I mean HD dealer. Sales person says best to put 1000 miles on before any upgrade/after market part addition. Parts guy says doesn't matter. Service says it's okay, won't hurt bike, and won't effect warranty. HELP?

3. 1000 mile service. Is it best then to wait and do after market AFTER this 1000 mile service check/up? I have to assume it's better to have aftermarket pipes/intake/upgrade download ON the bike and with some miles on it so the service check/up notes any issues from modifications made.

4. Sorry for all the questions, but you most likely know a lot more than I do! I'm buying a Roland Sands intake soley on looks, and because I don't like the way the stock teardrop gets in the way of my knee. Also, I do understand from researching it that a higher performing intake is necessary to feed the new pipes. But, what is the justification of $400+ for Roland Sands and the like (includes K&N filters). Do these somehow feed even more air, and in some special way? Or, is it just again typically price rape on parts...of which I'm now as guilty as all of us for letting them get away with it cuz I loves me my after market parts!

THANKS

Yes, a stage 1 is exhaust, intake and download on EFI engines. I would wait until after the 1000 mile service to insure there are no problems before adding modifications. But that is personal preference. Some mods are based on looks, however I would not purchase an intake "solely" on looks. But again, to each his own.

You can find intakes that work just as well for under half the price. Like this http://realhog.com/detail.cfm?model_...25&sblid_name= I guess it's just preference but I wouldn't spend 400 on an intake. I got my pipes, intake and fuelpak for $500 total and did the install myself. My bike runs and sounds great so I'm happy. I'm sure you will be with whatever you do.

Nothing wrong with riding it stock for awhile. Put some miles on it before modding it up, just my .02. But yea, I agree that you shouldn't do any modifications until the engine is properly broken in. You should be focusing on oil changes more than anything during the first 1000 miles, again just my .02.

Your bike is already broken in if it has 400 miles on it.

I had the dealer install the stage 1 intake, thunderheader, and SE supertuner when i bought my bike new a couple of weeks ago and both the parts guy and the service guy said it was better to have it installed now then later because if anything does happen, then the warenty will cover it since all the parts you get with the bike when you buy it new are covered in the warenty. He just told me to make sure i took it easy (no hot rodding) untill my 1000 mile service and it will be fine.
