Ok, so I have a similar question. My bike(2000 dyna super glide sport) has an upgraded breather and pipes. It is carbureted so; if I replace just the pipes/headers does that mean I should get a re-tune or will she be good to go? Im not the most mechanically savy guy in the world.

To take advantage of your performance pipes and AC you really do need to "tune" the carb by going to larger idle and main jets; not doing so will result in the bike running excessively lean and cause chrome pipes to turn blue. Changing carb jets is not terribly difficult, but does require some care and basic tools.

O-Town D, are those Rush slip-ons on your Fat Bob? If they are, how do they sound as compared to the stock pipes.

"...are those Rush slip-ons on your Fat Bob? If they are, how do they sound as compared to the stock pipes?"

Yes, Rush slip-ons with the 1.75" baffles - sound output is a great improvement over the OEM muffs (much better tone and "bark"), and seat-of-the-pants performance is also slightly better. Don't have a vid/sound clip of my system, but Rush has several clips on their website that you can check out.

I also swapped out the '010 header pipe with an '09 to run without a catalyst (a direct fit, no mods needed), which further improved overall sound and performance. To take advantage of the improved exhaust I added Nightrider XIED A/F enhancers (a low-budget tuner), and the bike runs pretty decent.

If you plan on getting Rushes for your cat-header pipe, they suggest you use 2.00" or even 2.25" baffles (Rush is a sponsor here so you can easily contact them for more info). If you do get the larger baffles be prepared to receive a lot of attention - you will definitely be noticed! Hope that helps.

I went by what several vendors as well as what other forum members reported: with only exhaust/breather mods the Harley ECM should be able to make sufficient mixture corrections to allow the motor to run decently; I wanted to be on the "safe" side and so added the XIEDs (checking the color/condition of the spark plugs is helpful on this). But when the time comes to add in a cam, then there's no getting around it - a tuner ($$$) will definitely be a requirement.

Each bike and rider is different, so your results may vary; perhaps the F-Bob's 2-1-2 system has a slight advantage in this area, I dunno - just saying what works in my case.

I actually like the looks of the stock pipes on my Fat Bob, but I want it a bit louder, but not obnoxiously loud as I have neighbors and one is on the city council (she's cool though). As far as the 2 or 2.25" baffles, are you saying they are really loud? Kind of open question but you mention you will be heard!

Grog there not loud. As long as you have the stock head pipe which has the catalitic convertor. If you did like O town and bought an earlier model headpipe without the cat then it would be loud. Check out my video on utube. The sound in the video is just about exact what they sound like. To often videos dont sound like the real thing.

When I did exhaust only on my Softail I added XieDs... ran ok without the Xieds, ran better with them. Can't go wrong for the price.

But I did learn 2 lessons with the Fat Boy...
1. I am a Dyna person (sold the FatBoy in 2 months and kept the Dyna)
2. I cannot own any Harley that is not stage 1. Once you get use to the power and sound, you can't do without it.
