I took my bike in for it's 5k, the dealer had put too much oil in the engine, and in the tranny, at least .5 of qt. more than needed. The oil registered a inch above the full on engine oil dipstick, and the tranny dipstick had oil 1/4inch above the full on it's dipstick. I had to ride it home about 20m to find this out. I again changed it out to the right amounts. No more of that crap!
I am now hearing noises that i did not notice in the past. I hear a knock at low speeds very faint and sometimes it doesnt do it at all. I hope by putting to much oil in thing did not miss it up.
I have overfilled my oil before with no problem . It just leaked out the breather. That was on a sportster during a trip to the hills. made a mess though.
Hummm,.... I couldnt imagine that putting 1/2qt more oil in the engine would hurt anything, but i'm not sure about what would happen if ya overfilled the tranny. A few months ago I had my dealer do my 1,000 miles service and they put well over 1 quart of oil in my engine, and I didnt double check their work so when I went on a ride later that evening it blew oil all over the side of my bike from the air cleaner. Needless to say,.... I was pretty upset. They had also left greasy handprints on my pipes and on my derby cover and it took ALOT of work to get the handprints off. Luckily, they didnt overfill anything else when I checked the other fluids. So I couldnt imagine whats causing your noise, but luckily Harleys will spit out the extra oil through the breather rathar than blow seals and screw up things in most cases from what my indy service guy says.
I experienced the same as Dakota, but with my '06 SG. I quit taking my ride to dealer for the oil change after the first two changes and started doing it myself. As for the noise I can't help you with that one.
just another reason for doing it yourself or at least educating yourself enough to check their work. to me its the next level of ownership - becoming intimate w/the machine. after all it is a special relationship - right?
Gee, Harley shops must get paid extra to overfill every bike they can. My 1k was the first time and the last a dealer will get to do routine service on mine.
Best to do it yourself. Makes me wonder what they put in for oil.
