OK, just be safe here. In the event of a dead battery a motorist offers a jump using one of these Emergency Battery packs.... you've all seen them. They'll jump a battery, compressor will fill a tire and such.
Is it safe to do that or is it a bit too much current (amps) to hit the system with? 12 volts is 12 volts but some of these packs have 600-700 CCA which is tripple or more (i think) of what our batteries are.
Can't offer the "definitive" answer on a good question, only pass on my experiences with my old FXR: best course of action is to recharge the batt with the appropriate charger, but when stuck out on the road with a dead batt I have push-started the bike with success (helps if you have a slight down-hill slope), and I have successfully jump-started from a car one time (car motor was OFF). Bike was not adversely affected whichever method was used to get it started. But maybe I was just lucky....

I've had my bike jumped using the emergency pack ... I don't believe they adversely affect anything ... your electrical system is protected with (mostly) 15 amp fuses (main is 40 amp) ... so, I wouldn't worry too much ....
I'm not an electrician, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night ... J/K
I've also push started my bike a few times ... what really sux is when you don't quite get up enough speed or catch enough traction to get it to start ...! Hate it ...! Definitely helps to have a little down-hill slope ....
I have jump started with engines running too, as said 12 volts is 12 volts. For those that have experienced a problem it was more likely caused by the low voltage and trying to crank to begin with. I have seen controllers fail when trying to start when the voltage dropped below 9.5 volts. That seems to destroy the hard wired memory.
