I got the jireh rim and laced it to my stock street bob hub. Then I brought it to the local guy who said he knew how to true a rim. When I got it back it was off center compared to the fender and it wobbled pretty bad. I talked to the guy who trued it and he said the rim was bad to sell it. He already mounted and balanced the tire on it when he gave it back to me. He doesn't want anything more to do with it. Now I have to bring it to another place and repay to have it done right.
Can it be trued with the tire mounted on the rim?
Can the rim be bad?
I need some advice ASAP before I bring it to another place and end up in the same situation?
Same thing happened to me. I took mine to the Dealer who said they could true it. What they did was true it to the stock specs which is wrong because of the wider rim. It needs to be centered. If the offset is not the same on both sides, it is wrong. I took it back and had them fix it. I didn't bring in a stock wheel so the tech should have known enough to calculate the offset. The tech tried to charge me for the rework, and I told him to get the manager. Few minutes later the service manager came back and told me I was good to go.
To answer your question, no I don't think it can be trued with the tire on the wheel, and I doubt the rim is bad. I would try to get your money back from the guy who did the initial work and find someone who is actually capable of doing it.
Thanks for the info. I wish I could post a video of it spinning on the bike, its way off. I tried talking to the guy I had true it but he keeps saying the rim is bad, I told him it wasn't centered and he told me the holes were drilled wrong. I didn't think there was anything wrong with the rim, I know a lot of people on this site have done this and I've never heard anyone say anything bad about the rim.
I'm bringing it to a dealer to have done right. Once I get it done I will call the first guy back and prove it wasn't the rim and try to get some money back. I tried to go local and use an Indy but it didn't work out for me this time.
I had the same trouble with mine when I had it done. Took the indy 4 times before he got it close enough to make me happy. Its still not prefect but the indy had abiut 10hr labor in it at that point
If he trued the wheel it would not wobble, so he didn't do the job, I would force the issue, or make sure he understands you will post the story on all the forums. You paid for a certain job, you didn't get it. Refund or performance.

How could the guy mount and balance a tire on a bad rim? He didn't call you to say the rim was bad before that? He just went ahead and did a horrible job with it?
Well the dealer I brought the rim to called me back and said they got it trued and balanced. At a cheaper price then what I paid my Inday too. I can't say enough good things about North End Harley in Plattsburgh NY!
He also told me the person who did it before only tightened the spokes and that it was way off. I wont post the name of my Indy yet, I'll give him a chance to make right. I'm just glad I'll have the bike back together for the weekend, its suppose to be nice around. Thanks for the help everyone.
Got the rim/tire back on the bike, looks great! Also talked to the Indy and told him there was nothing wrong with the rim. He offered back $40 which is better then nothing. I wont bad mouth his place but I will think twice before going back.
This really does make the bike look sweet.

You should post the name to help prevent others from having to deal with an incompetent mechanic.
