I crashed today. If you start to get the urge to feel sorry for me .. . DONT! I was showing off and f'ed up big time. End result was a demolished ego, a dent in the gas tank, a bent clutch handle and possibly a bent rim. I still feel sick to my stomach thinking about it.
Anyway, The rim is why I'm posting this. Is there a sure fire way to tell if a rim is bent. I'll go over where i'm at now.
Looking at it from the side, while riding, it looks wobbly, but I can't tell if it's the rim, or just the tire.
When I stand up on the pegs and look over it from the top it seem to be rolling true. Perhaps a littlebit off, but nothing like when viewed from an angle like mentioned above.
I checked all spokes, they all appear to be straight and normal.
I can't feel anything different in the ride. Had it up to 140kmph on the way home to see if a wobble would develop.
Get it up on a jack. Use a stick or something to make a point of reference in alignment with the rim. Spin the rim. If the side of the rim deviates from the reference point a bunch, yeah, you have a bent or untrue rim.
Depending on how bad it is you may be able to take it in for spoke replacement and re-truing. Only a professional could tell...
When I worked on bikes many years ago, one of the things I did a lot was crash damage estimates. When there was any question about a bent rim, we would pull the wheel, dismount the tire and put the thing on a truing stand. It really needs to be checked for out-of-round as well as side-to-side deflection.
Well, just from observing the rim/tire from the side, it seems to be bent a bit. I went back to check out where it happened, andIdon't see anythingthat could have bent the rim. I think I was in a bit of shock right afterwards, so I didn't remember the incident that well.
There is a small curb sort of thing that I went over, but it's rounded asphalt and only about 2" high, then just a bush. I can't see that curb doing it. What do you think?
I nailed a pot hole earlier the same day, to the point where my feet came off the pegs and it felt like the rear tire left the road. I was concerned that I may have done some damage there, but didn't look closely enough at the time.
Any thoughts?? .. How much of a jolt does it take to bend a rim? You can't tell the rim is bent with the bike sitting there, but you can see a wow from side to side when riding.
I'm going to stay off of it for the next few days, but have an hour's ride to the dealer. How dangerous is it to be riding like this?
I caught a rock with my front wheel on my 1200 C. Put a good dent in the rim. That became my opportunity to get rid of the laced wheel and replace it with a cast wheel. Yeahhhh
I'm hoping to get it in to the dealer on Wed to have them check it out. I purchased the wheel/tire extended coverage, so if it was the pothole, I may be in luck on the replacement cost.

If you've already had the thing up to 90 MPH and it didn't throw ya, I don't think I'd worry too much about a nice relaxing ride to the shop. lol
