Just curious, when does everyone shift their bike into 6th??
I shift into 6th right after 5th
As others, ususlly around 65 to 70, the important thing is as 'Wanna Ride' said dont lug..
After your bike is broke in, and you have opened up the breathig and exhast some, 5th gear is happy from 45 to 85. If its a nice peice of road drop her in at 65 or 70 and injoy the cruize. However if traffic's funny, you might want to stay in the power band of 5th to manuver around the pack a little better.
Normally shift at 60 but with the added fuel mix given with the Xieds I can shift at 50/55 and not lug as I climb uphill. Love em.
No more scary engine noises with the Xieds.
Top end inproves too.
65+. If I'm on a down slope and the motor isn't pulling (just using the compression to slow down) I'll go as low as 60.
But what works on a street bob isn't appropriate for an electra glide - big difference in weight between these 2 machines, so the demands on the engine is less.
Thanks for all the replies. I do not lug my engine and I have been going with what my engine is telling me and by the sounds of all the responses, I've been doing well with it. Thanks for all the thoughts, just wanted to verify and plain curious too to see what everyone else was doing.
Here are some not so scientific test results I did a while ago.
I have a stock 2009 FXDL except for the Rush slip-ons.
At 60 MPH in 6th Gear - 2000RPM
At 65 MPH in 6th Gear - 2200RPM
At 75 MPH in 6th Gear - 2800RPM
At 80 MPH in 6th Gear - 3000RPM
At the lower speeds there is simply no passing power. It feels like you are starting out from a stop in 3rd gear. The question is would you cruise around at 2200 RPM? I find the bike runs best at about 3000 RPM.
