Default FXDB key in the neck

So I can't ride today... bike is STILL at the dealer waiting on cables for my new bars... among other things.

This is the first HD I've had where I have to leave the key in the ignition in order to ride ... AND ... that key is in the neck. Having the key flopping away as I roll down the highway, just really seems like a stupid frigging idea to me. Having the key + switch on the tank console worked fine... WHY did they want to change it?

So ok. eventually I want to change this.. Ideally I'd like to have the ability to lock the fork (and take the key with me obviously). So I'd like to move the ignition switch completely away from the fork location. Ideally (again) I would like to relocate a standard key / ignition switch to a custom made box over where the horn is located - and relocate the horn someplace else.

Has anyone done anything like this?

There's been quite a few people who have done this. Try doing a search but here is a link to one of the posts: https://www.hdforums.com/forum/dyna-...e-up-pics.html

I plan on doing this mod this fall/winter. Most of the guys on here that relocate the ignition move it to the dash, however I like you also want it where the horn mounts. Looks really trick there, plus I want to keep my dash clean. J&P makes several kits for this that come with a FXDWG/FXDC style ignition and mount that work in the horn area, however the mounting plates are pretty ugly. They also sell the ignition separately for about $35. I plan on buying the ignition and having a machine shop fab me a custom ignition plate that mounts right where the horn did (bottom of the motor mount).

Klock Werks makes a nice looking chrome mount but it goes for about $160. Here are some pics......

And some pics of a custom mount....

There is another thread where some have just mounted a toggle switch @ the horn. Grind the nub off the key and power up through the switch, bypass ign at the switch to the toggle. If you have the alarm there is really no way to just ride off with the bike an you can always place the toggle in an inconspicuous area if you want. I moved my ign to the dash. Never locked the fork since day one, you guys actually look the fork?

Here's how I relocated the ignition switch to above the horn.

I cut the nub off the key so that I could remove it in the "Ignition" position and I just leave it turned there. If I want to lock the forks, turn to "Acc" or whatever else, I can still do that with the altered key.

I use the toggle to supply power to the ignition, I cut the red wire right at the frame junction behind the ignition switch and ran both sides to the toggle switch. My starting procedure is to jump on the bike, flip the toggle and hit the starter button. My key and fob remain zipped in my pocket at all times.

The second (smaller toggle switch) is to turn on the oil cooler fans. Both switches were marine grade with optional rubber toggle covers. I used a 50 amp switch for the ignition.

Now I don't use a key anymore! The bike won't start for anyone without the fob. If someone stole my key and fob, chances are they wouldn't even know that the ignition was switched off under the tank anyway.

If I take the bike to the shop, I'll just flip the switch to "On" so that it acts like a stock bike and hand them an unaltered key along with a fob.
