First let me say Hi to all. I am new here as this is my first post and my first Harley. I have always wanted a Harley. Like they say nothing sounds like a Harley! Years ago I bought a Suzuki when I was young and took my son for a few rides and kept the bike a couple years. Now some 30 years later my wife and I are retired and live in Sunny South Florida where we can ride all year long. We went to the local HD dealer and we almost bought a black 2011 Super Glide. I liked it a lot but it lacked something and the salesman was new and did not know a lot about the Dyna's. Since I didn't either I decided to go home and do some research. When we got home I went on the HD web site and built my dream Dyna Super Glide. I saw as an option the Candy Root Beer color and I told my wife I want to try and find this color. So the next day we went to the West Palm Beach HD dealer and they had my dream bike right there on the floor. I just had to have that bike. It had the 2 tone dark/light candy root beer and the passive alarm system. All that beautiful chrome shining me right in the face. The salesman (I'll call him Steve from now on because he was such a nice guy) was great and even though it was quite a bit more expensive than the black one, my wife said, "get that bike". Well I have to admit I was scared to death. I had not ridden in 30 years and this bike was a beast compared to that 400 GN Suzuki with a kick start that I usually just jump started to save my ankle. Steve told me he would get a used super glide and let me ride it until I felt comfortable. Well it all came back pretty quickly though I'll admit muscling this 645 lb beast is quite a bit different than that little Japanese bike. I went in and I took her home that day which was Thursday. I loaded it up with Screaming Eagle pipes, sissy bar, windshield, forward foot controls and luggage rack.
Now let me tell you my wife really like the Harley Davidson clothes line and well let's just say we made that dealer very happy. Helmets, Jackets, accessories and more to come. I have a Corvette and am used to what we call the Corvette Tax but Harley Davidson puts that tax to shame but I have to admit it is good quality stuff. So I guess you can say you get what you pay for.
Today my wife and I took our first ride together on it and she loved every minute. She did not want to go home so we rode and rode for about 3 hours. What a bike! Thank You Harley Davidson and a special thanks to Andy at West Palm Beach Harley Davidson for saving the day when a few non-financial glitches threatened the deal.
Did your dealer talk to you about joining HOG (Harley Owners Group) ? A lot of people, especially those new or returning to riding find this group helpful. Joining will give you an opportunity to meet people with the same interests and go on group rides.
In my opinion the big difference between Japanese bikes and Harleys is the personality. Harleys have personality.. they have a soul. Treat your bike like you would treat a new friend. Keep her clean, keep good maintenance, and ride her as often as possible. The more you ride her, the more you'll enjoy the experience.
This site is a great place to go for opinions and advice. So post often. And again, welcome.
