Default Riser install - question

I got 4 1/2 inch risers off ebay, brand is bikers choice, only came with the risers. Wondering if I am using the same bolts or need new ones?

When I put 4 1/2 inch risers on my fxdc I used the same bolts. You shouldn't have a problem.

I agree. Bought the HD 4 1/2" risers and the supplied bolts where the same length. A little blue loctite and the job was quick and easy.

this is a pretty dumb question. If the bolts thread in then use the same bolts. If they don't then get different ones that fit.

Ha, I got more if you want. I was thinking that since the risers are longer that may require longer bolts, for structural integrity. But I got everything off now and looks fine to me. Thanks .

There are no dumb questions; answers though, see above.

The stock bolts should work just fine. Before you install, I highly recommend changing the stock bushings to urethane. You have to pull them out anyway and they cost about $30.00 and are a major improvement over the stockers.

What type of improvement? I got everything on , all is tight but I'm noticing the very slightest amount of play when turning.

The stock bushings may be okay for the 4.5" risers and drag bars. That play you noticed will be magnified with taller risers or apes.

As for the poly bushings, a set of $10 J&P bushings #5000021 will do the trick.

You can install new bushings easily. Just loosen both riser bolts and remove one, rotate bar and riser on one side to clear, replace bushings, rotate back into place, replace bolt, do other side the same way. Now tighten the bolts down, take your time, while straddling the bike sight down the bars to see if they align with the top tree, if not, tweak them until they do and continue tightening. Sometimes, on tall risers, you have to loosen the bar clamps in order to get things to align straight.

I've had risers that used course thread bolts and some that used fine thread bolts. As stated above, if they fit, then use them. All risers have about the same amount of thread engagement, so longer or shorter bolts are not needed when changing riser heights.
