Until recently, I could never see the justification in the huge cost of the windvest when you can buy decent windshields for hundreds less. But after riding with some guys who use them and actually putting my hands on one mounted to a bike, I was awfully dang impressed. There is some serious technology and strength in those little windshields. If I ever lay out my hard earned cash on a windshield again, it will probably be a windvest.
Found most of the buffetting came under the various sport shields I've owned, over the shoulder of the tank and would buffett the helmet. Put a FX HD Touring shield, helped a little. Added a pair of Memphis Shades lowers, played with adjusting everything and finally got it right. I don't see how that little 14" windvest would do the same job on long trips, but then I've no experience with them, only similar sized sport shields.
I have an HD Compact QD. I really hate the buffeting I get behind it, especially from under the shield.
I smoke and with the shield on above 40mph it will blow the cigarettes and lighter out of my shirt pocket.
Took the shield off and actually it's much better. I can run 70 mph and nothing blows out of my shirt pocket.
I really would like to have a good windshield, but I already have $350 in this one and you could spend a fortune buying shields until you are lucky enough to find one you like.
I have the H-D quick detach with those cutouts for my passing lamps/aux lights. Tried all kinds of angle adjustments with and without lowers and nothing really made any significant improvement. Now, when I get sick of the turbulence, I put my feet on the highway pegs and keep my knees glued to the tank, this helps more than anything.
I have the QD on my street bob, wear a 3/4 helmet, tool bag under head light, mounted about 1/4 of an inch below the highest point and do a 100 miles a day and don't really have any issues. Try the tool bag under the head light and se if it helps.
I'm going to have to agree w/my friend from Colorado...I too have a windvest, exact model as his and they work great. I was lucky enough to buy it off of a member here, but if you have the coin that would be my choice. GL
I agree with you tinker1, it doesn't detract from the look of the bike. I also like those bars you are running. I would like to put apes on but my concern is I would have to extend everything. I am going to order the windvest. Looks sharp.
