Ok, So My 2006 Street Bob has just under 8k on it. I've never so much as had a hiccup. I recently have been reading about the Infamous IPB problems with the 06 Dyna's. I also just got a new Shoei Full face helmet( I state this because I'm wondering if this is contributing to me hearing something different).
When I put the bike in neutral, there is a noticeable change in sound from the primary. Sounds a bit like a light grinding noise, when the bike is shifted into gear, that noise goes away.
The reason I'm concerned is because I'm suppose to ride to Ocean City tomorrow morning at 7:00am. Its about a 170 mile trip each way. Day trip.
So, what do you think? I'm I paranoid, or should I stay home tomorrow?
I'd be more worried about the rotor/stator problem. On the '06 it is a two piece unit. The bolts come loose and grind then destroy the unit. That could be the grinding noise.
You could always take the outer cover of the primary off inspect it to see if there are any metal shaving or such to ease your mind if there is any grinding of any sort... but your bike should be fine brotha... only 8000 miles on it and it is a 06... Your bike should be fine... or do a quick fluid change before you go if that will take any edge off...
but your bike should be fine... Enjoy your ride....
My 06 superglide is doing the exact same thing. Start it in neutral and there is a whirring noise coming from the left side that is loud. Put it in gear and it goes away. Stop at a stoplight and pull in the clutch, no noise. Put it in neutral and let the clutch out, loud whirring noise. Pull in clutch: noise goes away.
I'm bringing my bike in next week and see what the dealer says. I'm suspecting the IPB but I dont want to give them any hints, I want to see if they confirm that or not.
I had the same issue on my 06 wide glide. I was pretty paranoid for a while too, but one way you can narrow it down to the IPB is start the bike in neutral and squeeze the clutch. If the sound goes away when you squeeze it, it's most likely the IPB. It will come back when you release the clutch in neutral. Also, it will whirr when you downshift from 3 to 2 and 2 to 1. I had my IPB replaced three times by HD and after the third time they replaced the inner primary with the 07 setup.
I wouldn't freak out about riding the bike 170 miles one way, I rode mine for 1000 miles after i found out the bearing was bad. It took them a while to get my bike in the shop an I wasn't about to stop riding.
Also, some of the guys swear on here that the baker hi torque bearing will fix your problem, and I would have went that route if harley wasnt replacing my whole primary. They wanted it all to be stock.

As for my issue, I brought the bike in and reproduced the noise for the service guy and he agreed something was wrong. I spoke to them the next day on the phone and he confirms the Inner Primary Bearing needs to be replaced.
