The HD cooler mounts about an inch offset to the right (viewed from sitting on the bike). The hoses route inside the left frame down tube.

You can always put on a billet cooler. They mount on the frame downtube.

A little off topic but have you seen the cooling fans that HD make for the Tourers ?

I thought maybe a smaller version might go alright, even mounted up under the steering head blowing back through the top end (The HD ones stand out like dogs bollocks).

The problem that I see with the oil coolers is they only cool well when air is moving through them, but it's when you are stuck in traffic that you need a cooler . I thought a small thermo fan on an oil cooler would work ok too.

It's been done - found it on another motorcycle site. Someone installed a small computer fan on the cooler. Even a cooler with no fan is better than no cooler at all.

True, but I was thinking along the lines of exactly what you suggest (Hmmm, I wonder if intel make a chrome cpu fan) ?

To answer Alaska bobber: becuase the oil needs to be hot enough to work efficiently (Not sure what the optimal temp is though). Those coolers that don't have the thermostatic control often have covers you can slip over for the winter months.

It was in the 100's all summer in the Dallas area and on a commute, I sometimes (well, OK, always) get caught in barely-moving traffic, so I had the HD oil cooler installed at the first maintenance. I haven't found one of those oil-temp dipsticks for the '06 so I can't tell you how much difference it made, but I didn't have nearly as much sluggish stumble after long periods idling in the heat, so maybe it helped a little.

I'm sure a fan would be nice, but there's sure not much room behind the cooler to put one. Even if you're not moving, though, the cooler is radiating heat to the atmosphere to some degree, so unless you're riding in 200+ degree heat, it's helping, plus you've added a small bit of oil capacity to the system. Downside: the mounting position guarantees it will collect all sorts of crap thrown up from the front wheel, and will be the dirtiest thing on your whole bike after a ride. Those side-frame-mounted aftermarket coolers may look silly, but I'll bet they work a lot better and stay cleaner.
