Depends on what your plan is for the bike. If forwards, apes, slammed shocks and willie g skulls blow your skirt up..then get the SB. If none of that appeals to you and you like bikes that are awesome at everything...then no question get the fxdx. It does seem though as the dyna camp is clearly divided on this. As most if not all SB, and WG owners simply love to hate on the DX. Inferiority complexes come in all shapes and sizes.

If you remove the front\ rear suspension from the equation, are there any clear differences in the DX that makes it outperform\handle better than a new dyna?

People here keep saying the DX handles better and that should be used as a deciding factor in getting the bike. Unless I am missing something here, I saw no mention of anyone doing any motocross racing. These are Harley cruisers we are talking about. Last I check, Dyna's handle just fine.

Also, suspensions can be upgraded on ANY bike (if needed).

To pay the same price for a FXDX as your would a current version Dyna w/ a 6 speed gearbox, FI, bigger engine, etc. just isn't worth it. IMO you will gain more benefit out of improvements the SB offers than you would the handling of the FXDX.

Hell, I know a guy who rides a Gold Wing, and I shi-t you not, he will dust most people here in the twisties. You may disagree, but the bike is only as good as the rider....

the 6spd is a benefit..the 96 motor is not..at least in stock form. And the price to make a 96 worth it's weight in performance is nearly identical in doing a well prepped 95-97incher. Fuel injection is a wash, both camps have their pros and cons on that with no clear winner.. Both have blacked out drivetrains so same/same. The SB mid glide is..well nothing to brag about. Why would you ever not choose 3 way adjustability if you had the option? Dual disc front brakes over a single...unless stopping means nothing to you and better stopping is unneccessary. IMHO pound for pound the DX wins..but I already own one so I'm not out there shopping. When I was there were plenty of cheap SB's, WG's and regular SG's..I wanted the best there was to offer and that was the DX.

Aint no way you are gonna convince me that those adjustable Sportster front toothpick legs are gonna make that bike handle better than the new 49mm forks.....the rear shocks are a wash....he can get a set of 418s or Works shocks that are as good or better than the 10 year old clapped out stock fully adjustable shocks.....all OEM harley shocks.....SUCK...period. They are all lowest cost for acceptable performance......
Suspension alone, especially old suspension parts..... is not a reason to chose the FXDX over the FXDB.......if they are the same price....the FXDX better have low miles......

Ultimately it's your choice but for me I'll take the newer bike. To start with I'm not a fan of the small front end. A newer bike is obviously worth more especially at time of resale. If handling is what your after minor mods can make any bike handle great and I don't care how good it handled when it was new an 11-12 year old bike is probably going to need alot of the same suspension mods because they will be worn out. What you can't do is easily make the old style frame stronger and add the rigidity that has been engineered into the newer frames. At the end of the day it doesn't matter how good your suspension is of the frame flexes more.
