I have no problems plugging a tire, front or rear, depending on the damage from the object and the size of the hole. The only consideration in plugging or patching a tire is if you have ridden on the tire flat. If you have ridden on the tire flat you more than likely have damaged the side wall and that is the only thing I would be concerned about failing while riding, not the plug its self. So in that case, a plug should only be temporary and you should replace the tire ASAP.
One other consideration would be the type of plug used and I would only recommend a Safety Seal rope plug. I have never experienced a failure with a "Safety Seal" plug and I would never use anything but a "Safety Seal" plug in the repair. http://www.safetyseal.com/store/autokits.htm
I just like everyone else, was uneasy about plugs.
I had less than 500 miles on a new rear tire, and picked up a nail dead center thru the heavy part of the rubber..
Went to Indy to replace tire, And as he said he would glady sell me a new tire. He recommended a 'new' plug that he had been having great luck with..
It was pluged from the inside of the tire. I tried it and 9k later it hasnt lost any air. After watching them do it I felt comfortable with the process.
It kind of looked like a mushroom, with the head being inside the tire.

Heck, if you are going to the trouble of pulling the wheel off and dismounting the tire you might as well just replace the tire. Great luck in selling the extra labor maybe.
