Also a good friend of mine had an 06 dark red colored bike and was hearing noise and come to find out his clutch hub was shot. The friction and steel plates were fine, even the clutch basket was great but when we looked at the clutch bearing it was completely roasted... so.
Chirp = Belt too loose/tight or out of alignment
klunky rattle at idle in primary = rotor/stator/compensator
screeching like a metal rollerskate wheel on concrete = IPB
BTW, MoCo did my IPB complete with new cases last year. The bearing screches until you drop it into 1st gear then it stops. That is how you and everyone within 200ft of your bike knows it is the IPB.
Yea, I pulled into the dealer, about 10 people standing around outside by their bikes, and they all knew I had issues. You can't miss it....

Not trying argue with you, but, Lets review the OP.
1st.. he asked for our opion, "I need to know what you all think this could be..."
2nd.. Very unlikely (not impossible), but very unlikely, that an IPB problem would show its self at 2300 miles. "When I got it last year, it had only 1500 miles on it. There is now only 2300 miles on it" (I find this suspect on an almost 6 year old bike anyway)
3rd.. You state that his discription is 'consistent with many others who have had IPB failure' "Its a very loud chirping noise"
"It only does this when the bike is moving and gears are engaged"
"When I pull up to a light and stop, the noise stops"
Now I very well could be wrong, but of all the hundreds of IPB posts I have read on this forum, I dont recall a seeing any of those description refering to IPB faliure..
While 'chirping' is a tell-tell sound of a belt drive problem..
You state that 'his description of a chirp noise is consistent with many others who have had the IPB fail"
I would be interested in seeing your references.
Well Mr. know it all, one mans chirp is another mans screech and an intermittent failing IPB can elicit what would be considered a chirp until said bearing completely begins to fail and screech all the time. The OP was not specific in his description on when he comes to a stop the noise goes away if he took it out of gear, clutch in or out. Glad you have such advanced ESP.
Have a dealer check your belt and check your primary chain... that could fix or rule out certain factors... plus they may be able to tell you what is going on and give you and estimate... checking tension won't cost you an arm and a leg so don't avoid doing it or it might cost you an arm and or a leg... remember, safety first so if there is a problem, address and then get it fixed.

With such profound statements as this, I can only consede to your superior IPB's experience and knowledge.
Really, get it checked, you'll be better off. I had a feeling it was my IPB (had read quite a bit on it and expected my 2006 to **** the bed sooner or later). Was just finishing up a 200 mile ride when I started hearing the noise so swung by the dealer, told them what I thought it was and they just said, yea, you have a primary issue, but they wouldn't say anything else till they got into it.
They've been great, contacted MOCO and having cases all changed also so hopefully the IPB will be a mute point in the future.
