I need to know what you all think this could be...I have a 2006 Dyna Lowrider. When I got it last year, it had only 1500 miles on it. No problems, no weird noises, starts up no problem. So, since dropping the battery back in for this year, a weird noise has developed. Oh yeah, all the fluids have been changed and everything looked good. Its a very loud chirping noise...it sounds like its coming from the primary side. And at first it was intermittent, but now once I take off from a stop, the noise is continuous. It only does this when the bike is moving and gears are engaged. When I pull up to a light and stop, the noise stops. My buddy thinks it could be that the comp is loose, so we will be looking at this week. There is now only 2300 miles on it...any ideas or has someone else had this type of noise too? And if ya did, what was the problem?
Inner primary bearing is bad, common on 06 models. Call harley davidson tell them your problem and ask for a referance number and take it to your nearest dealer, they should cover most of the costs.
My primary went out last Tuesday, ended up being my inner primary bearing and race. Only 6500 miles on bike (bought it in October, sat for almost two years so mileage is low). Took it to Indy West, called MOCO and got a reference#. Long story short, they are making repairs and replacing the tranny case, and inner primary case (the original tranny cases on the 2006 Dyna did not have the two alignment dowels, thus allowing the inner primary case to shift, causing the bearing failures).
Indy West and MOCO have been great through this whole process!
Mine did not chirp though, but did make a growling and metal rubbing
noise when you said yours was making the noise. Got louder and louder.
I had a chirping sound on mine 2 years ago and I found out the rear wheel was out of alinement, I'd check that and the belt tension. Those are easy quick checks before tearing the primary off. Good luck !
I also have a 06 88 inch SB....the 88 inch SB motors were the ones with IPB issues and as I understand it the problem was corrected mid Year.
Now if you just had your fluids changed there is a rubber bumper that gets twisted out of whack to access the oil drain plug. Rarely does it get repositioned and allows the jiffy stand to contact the frame causing a chirping or knocking sound at various RPM's or deceleration/acceleration.
Mine made me crazy thinking it was the IPB which the dealer has assured me 1/2 a dozen times is not an issue on my SB.
Twisted the rubber bumper down and no more chirping or knocking sound.
