I've seen it on metrics, but never a Harley. Kudo's to you.

I think I'd consider frame mods to get the upper shock mounts relocated as well. That, or have the lowers put back where you wanted them in the first place.

Definitely an interesting mod. Not something I'd want, personally, but things like this are like tattoos that look really cool on someone else, but which I wouldn't have on my own skin. Most modern choppers fall into this category for me.

Interesting idea. It's not something you see everyday that's for sure. Now it's just gonna be a bit difficult to get dialed in (ie: shocks etc.) Keep us posted on your progress. Could be really cool.

I am not sure if this would work! But, you could try having a strong/stiff cross member welded in front of the tire (between the pivot point and the tire) and try running a single shock or twins like they on the rice rockets with the extended arms with it mounted just under the seat. You would have to fab up the mount points, but you could run a shorter shock which would be easier to find, lots of them already made and used on the rice rockets that work great!

The belt is from a Vrod, 152 1" international.

I did the swingarm for fit as well as the fender, the first time I fit this wheel the spacing between the swingarm and front part of the wheel was not enough. At speed the tire swelled and rubbed so that meant a longer belt, really did not have much room for axle adjustment. The fender I have would also have been a problem as far as clearance issues go, hit a bump and it would have hit the backside of seat.

My solution was to make things longer and why not go as long as I can?

The extensions are reinforced on the inside with a solid plug cut to fit snugly inside. The spot welds before and after along with the seam hold it all together nicely.

The shock mounts are a bit of head scratcher..........
I had thought about just having the shock mounts redone, but I am on the fence.
The idea of a mono shock type setup had crossed my mind.
I think for now I am going to stick to my guns and make a 16" strut and see.

Later,
paul

A 16" shock will be layed down at such an angle that it will be functioning as a decreasing rate unit, the further it compresses the less resistance it provides. A very special progressive wound spring would be needed to make it work but you would still be left with digressive damping. I would look on Craig's list for a take off single Ohlin shock from a Japanese 600 or Liter bike and graft on the single unit where you currently have the temporary unit.
