Got sick of looking at the hideous taillight on my bike today. Decided to clean it up a bit. I used existing hardware and some odds 'n ends I had laying around the garage. Not quite finished yet, but here's a few pics. I need to go to the hardware store tomorrow for some nuts and bolts, and for something to secure the wiring under the fender.
I plan on adding a license plate light at some point, maybe a small strip of white LED's or somthing.
Just my but I think the plate on there looks worse then the tail light. I cut the tab off the light and moved the plate to the swing arm. Only thing I had to buy was a lighted plate frame. Used the front belt guard braket and OE plate hanger to make the side mount.
I am with you on the tail light, ugly thing. And there aren't many replacement options either!
What are you running for a tail light? Your turns integrated with the tail light?
Your solution does clean up the rear fender better.
My turn signals do everything from the factory on my year Bob. I think it's something different. I would eventually like to replace the rear fender with one that doesn't have any holes or the stupid cleft chin at the bottom.

I hear ya, but there aren't too many other options. I just don't like the third light and I cannot mount my plate vertically on the side. CA vehicle code changed and you cannot mount your plate vertically anymore. I could probably get away with it, but being in my line of work, I like to try to set an example. Plus, my boss would probably compel me to make it compliant. I already get doo doo for my loud pipe...

You could still mount it horizontally using the same method I did. I just thought it looked better vertically. I don't think it would stick out to much more. The reason I used a frame instead of the LED plate bolts is there was less wire to mess with.
Not a fan of the horizontal mount off to one side. I really wanted to get a vertical side mount but no dice. Guess it's just my OCD wanting things to be somewhat symmetrical...
