Default Fuel Guage

Let me be clear, this is a rant. While I spent $13K on a bike I guess I shouldn't expect that the gas guage nor the low fuel indicator to work. I'm sorry but when I spent my hard earned money I do have expectations. Such as the fuel guage works, the reserve light works, or the miles to empty works this is 2011 afterall and Honda has it figured out, it can't be that hard!!!!! Luckly I was able to coast into a station with just a small amount of pushing to the pump. The first thing I heard from another Harley owner was "don't you look at your miles"? Christ who says that guage is accurate! Please, Please manufacture a bike that works. I shouldn't have to track my miles. Having to do so is absolute BS. (oh yeah, those of you that think I should live with this, kiss my a**!)

Been riding Harley for 40+ years and the guage/low fuel light is almost worthless on my 07 FXD. The light comes on at about 120 miles and the guage says it's half full. I use the odo and fill up at about 150 miles to be sure.

If you ran out of gas and the gauge didn't read low
or your light didn't come on then it needs fixed
they aren't 100% accurate but they work well enough
to let you know to get fuel

My light comes on and the gauge reads between
1/8 and 1/4 tank and I have done 25 miles but I
would not want to try much more than that
I would say when the light comes on I have
not quite a gallon left because it takes about
4 gallons to fill it

So I was reading the new combo tach/speedo install and found this little tidbit really interesting in regards to the fuel tank gas to low issues...

Initialization
After installing the new gauge, the vehicle should receive a full
tank of fuel in order to properly initialize the fuel range (miles
to empty) functionality.
During consumption of the first full tank of fuel, the gauge
software will begin the process of learning your riding patterns,
eventually tailoring the fuel range calculations to your unique
riding characteristics.
NOTE
After filling the fuel tank, the range function will not update until
the vehicle resumes normal speeds.
So unplug and plug your speedo when you do your next full tank of gas to make it figure it out how much gas you really do have left?

I just know I am going to put my 3" tank lift in first before swapping my speedo for the speedo/tach and hope the new gauge will figure it out.

I feel exactly the same way. My Bob is 3 weeks old and the gauge is worthless. The last time I had the light come on, I had over a gallon left in the tank....the gauge read empty.

I guess it's better that way than telling me I have more than I do. I'd still prefer it to be accurate!

I think less companies have it figured out than you think. Case in point

Last bike was a 2008 Kawasaki Vulcan Nomad. I averaged 38mpg. Well coming back from a trip with a group i pulled a dumb stunt. We had sportsters in the group with peanut tanks so i though i could skip a stop. Well my light came on and i went an additional 55 miles. On that Nomad the light was supposed to come on with .7 gallons left. There is no way i went 55 miles on .7 gallons.......

And yes when i filled up that time i checked my mileage. right at 40 mpg....

So gauges are wrong......Yes it sucks....yes...most of us could care less....

On my W.G. i have went at least another 20 miles after it hit LO and still only put 4 gallons in.......I like it that way....gives me a little screw up room.

Im still waiting on a case being filed on MOCO for this..... Somewhere someone is going to...as silly as it is.......
