I ask the the dealer the same question they said it was the norm for the six speed.Something about the heavy shift forks and design of the tranny.

I changed my tranny oil and put in Amsoil 75 90 Severe Gear oil a lot slicker to shift now.

Letting the clutch out and then shifting into gear should give one hell of a clunk!

Yeah, I did that once by accident, never again if I can help it. My clunk occurs even when clutch is all the way in and I'm switching from neutral to 1st or 1st to 2nd, sitting without the engine on but not all the time. Sometimes you hear nothing when it goes from N to 1. Crazy I tell you.

When dropping it in first gear (after warmed up) just rev the engine slightly and when the revs drop off kick it into first. Usually there is no clunk then.

What I've noticed in the past few years when I come across my bikes having a loud clunk shift noise my bike is usually not tuned correctly. When I rode my Road King I was running a carb, so I was able to adjust the idle speed and my carb was easier to tune on my own. I just traded for a Super Glide Custom I wanted to try the fuel injection and I've always loved the design of the dyna's. My 08 has this problem but I can't fix this unless I have the idle set lower. This is something I can't throw on the lift and do myself so I have to set an appointmet and spend the money to have it re-mapped for a lower idle. I think this will help. Your bike know when there is a problem... it will tell you with noises.
