Keith, unless something really bugs me, I go with book settings. You can adjust it slightly depending on your weight if you need to. Do those settings feel funny to you?
if your planning a long ride, don't air them up to maximum pressure. the pressure will exceed the rating before a couple hours. in the winter as the pavement is colder i would run lower pressure for some extra surface area grip from the tires.
When I bought my bike, dealer told me to run 30 psi front and 40 psi in rear. He failed to mention that 40 psi in rear tire was with passenger. I found it a little rough riding with just me. So now its 30 in front and 36 in rear. I still get about 12-14,000 miles out of my rear tire. Never heard of running higher than 40 psi in the rear, maybe the "old schoolers" know something that we don't.
