Ok, I had the front tire on my fat bob do the cupping thing that everyone talks about. I got 13,500 out of the front but went thru 2 rears in that time. Five weeks ago I put on a new front, three weeks ago a new rear. Got back from Arkansas and I noticed the front tire is cupped again!!! Took it in and of course they do not warranty any "wear" issue. Especially when they noticed that in that five weeks I put 5K miles on it.
I'm going to try Metzler Marathon 880E's on the Fat Bob. Anyone ever run these tires on a fat bob or wide glide?
I haven't had any "cupping" with my Dunlops yet, but I just ordered a pair of Pirelli Night Dragons for my bike, and I plan to pull the Dunlops with less than 1000 miles on them. They're the only tire available that is a straight-up replacement for the 180/60 17 rear. The front will be a 90/90, rather than the 80/90 up front now.
I think you'll have better luck with the Fat Bob tires. Sizes aren't so odd. I've read nothing but positive reviews on the Metzeler tires. I'd have had to go skinnier on the back with my wheels if I'd chosen Metzeler.
Metzlers are great tires . I ran them on all the bikes ive owned until I got a dyna with the michellin scorchers on it. I really like these tires so far but I only have 1500 miles on the bike. I usually ran metzler me 88 marathons and they worked great . Had avons on my last bike. Liked them a lot but they didnt last that long.
I have that exact tire and the 200mm rear to match. No chance I'd ever go back. The tire has a "softer footprint" and grips much better. I did, however, get about a 33% reduction in mileage, but I was riding pretty aggressively.
i just ordered a me880 for the rear on my bike. from all the reading i did online about the tire it sounds like its almost impossible to go wrong with the choice.
back in the day i used to run metzelers on a cafe racer i had, and i was happy with the tires then, hoping i like them now just as much.
Had night dragons on my wide glide for about 2000 miles now...love the feel and grip of these..take twists and turns with confidence. They seem to be wearing good so far....however the 180 rear didn't quite fill the fender like the stock...
maybe check to see if your front wheel is balanced properly. I tried going without wheel weights on my wheels (thought they broke up the look), but noticed some cupping on the front tire so ended up having them balanced and no more cupping. JAT
I still think 'cupping' is a differant issue than tire brands.
If the front tire on my truck started to show signs of 'cupping'
I would look at alignment and balance, not tire brand.
However I can see, how one brand may react differantly to the problem than another.
Faster wear in the problem areas and such..
