There is no mechanical/ electrical differences, it's just a design difference. Open stator coils may cool better than epoxy embedded ones. Epoxy embedded stator possible will hold together better than exposed coil.
Personally for the stator I upgraded my 22 amp to 32 amp using all Harley parts. I got a kit with the new rotor, stator, and voltage regulator.
I only use an aftermarket ignition module, other than that I've stayed stock.
Is this one damaged / burned? Not putting out correct test voltages before going through the regulator?
I only ask because often when they melt down there are several reasons. One, surprising is due to the battery not holding a charge. Another is an overload of lights drawing heavy current loads.
Changed the voltage regulator,an still wasn't showing the system was charging put a meter on stator an was only putting out .4 volts ac.Opened the derby cover an it smelled real bad after riding it too my mechanics , there was a little smoke coming out as well.Hopefully changing the stator will solve the problem.I'll be able too tell more thursday evening when we tear into it.As you mentioned there are several reasons they melt down could you please elaborate on this a little more. My battery seems too be holding a charge well,an there is no heavy overloads of lights to draw a huge current.
