May be telling you something you already have done or known, but check out C&C seats. I personally don't have one YET, but my wife does, sans backrest, but they are a comfortable seat. I, like you, am needing something with a backrest as well. I plan on ordering one from them as soon as funds allow. She has a fastback covered in gray ostrich and it's awesome. And if you will call and talk to them, they can custom make the seat to move you forward or backward if so needed. The inherent design of these seats provides limited lumbar support by themselves, but you can order one with a backrest if you need more. About $520 with backrest, which is on par or cheaper than others out there (or about $300.00 without backrest). their customer service is excellent. They really go out of their way to make satisfied customers. I would have bought one with a backrest in the beginning, but money wouldn't allow it right then, but the stock WG seat had to go. Love the look, but it was awful for comfort. Also check Saddlemen (I have a Renegade Solo with gel) and Corbin, but they're both kinda pricey. I have discovered though, that comfort is priceless when staying in the saddle all day.
My .02 worth. Hope this helps.
I hear you on the backrest. WHen i am local i dont need or want the backrest. But when i am on a long ride the backrest is a lifesaver. I have a mustang seat with the removeble backrest and it is the best thing i could of done.
I did read an article a while back where the guy took his removable side plates and basically cut the mounts for the passenger backrest off, and then welded them to be positioned behind the drivers seat.
I've been toying with the idea of doing this so I can put a small backrest on (and be able to take it off) to help keep me positioned on the seat when launching the bike hard.
