Default Rear Axle Removal Help

I have to remove my rear tire because I sheared off a few bolts on my belt pulley. I have the manual and followed the steps and I'm to the point where I'm supposed to remove the rear axle, but I can't get it to budge. Ive been going at it for a while with a rubber hammer and can't get it to move at all. Anyone have any tips for me?

I have no tips really. I had to carefully beat the hell out of it to get it to come out. I used a five pound hammer and a punch, but had to be careful not to mushroom the end of the axle or knock the bike right off the jack. Good luck, remember to use anti seize when you put it back in.

Won't matter, just don't forget the anti-seize!

You can use a sledge hammer and a block of wood, I would put the axle nut on it if you have enough threads showing with it on, until it breaks free so you can chase the threads just in case.

Be sure to give your wheel bearings a real good inspection, or perhaps just replace them.

That is a good point, I did have to replace mine. It has been so long ago I forgot. I carefully beat on it making sure not to cause any damage....and it stayed in there. Honestly, when I got pissed off and really knocked the **** out of it is when it started to move. I get pissed off just thinking about it.

If you have an electric drill with chisel action (usualy SDS type) and a bit with a pointed end then you can put the point against the dimple in the axle and pull the trigger. It should shock the axle free.

Any method you use may give the bearings a hard time so it might be worth replacing them as a precaution.
