Going to look at a 2001 Harley Davidson FXDXT this week. Can anyone let me know if there were any outstanding issues with the engine or this model? I have heard of early model Twin cam issues, but were these issues resolved by 01? Thanks for the info.
Sweet bike, the major thing is you will want to upgrade the cam chain setup to the new hydraulic style or gear drive depending on your runout, as well as the inner and outer cam bearings while you are in there.
Those bikes are tough to come by, does it include the fairing and bags?
How bad are those two jobs? Bike has around 21k, maybe those were completed.
I have not done it on mine yet, but will tackle it this winter, so I can't really answer. The bearings aren't really any more labor than swapping the other stuff since you already have the cam chest apart. I know I was quoted $400 labor from an indie for either the conversion or gear drive, same labor cost. If they were already completed that would be awesome.
With 21K I would have someone at least check the tensioner shoes. If they look OK you may go another 10K, or even more with them. But 20-25K is when some have reported them starting to wear thin. And when that occurs they can disintegrate, with the pieces causing the oil pump to fail.
Otherwise 2001 should be a good year for the 88" engine and the FXDXT is a great bike!

Thanks. Hoping the bike didn't sell today, but it may have. If not plan to try to trade and pickup this week. If not, I keep looking.

Keep a look out for a standard FXDX as well, same bike without the bags and fairing. You could get some aftermarket bags and quarter fairing and have a similar bike. My FXDX is in my sig pic, I swapped to a lowrider tank to get the gauges off the handlebars. I need to get an updated pic, have new exhaust and some more powdercoating done now. Should have the bike back this week from the coater.
How do you like that skinny front end? I have a Vulcan 900 which has a similar front end, but I have not ridden many Dyna's to get a feel. Is that the same front end used on sportsters?
