I am a avid cyclist and have used Ram Mounts RAM Mounting Systems RAP-274-1-AP6U EZ ON/OFF Handlebar Mount for Apple iPhone 3G & 3GS when riding. I have put on many a miles with this mount with zero issues, so I decided to install this mount onto my Street Bob. So far I have logged about 200 miles with the iPhone in the cradle (2/3 of which were without the windshield installed) and it doesn't budge. This thing is great and only cost $10 from amazon.
...and providing he's not a circus chimp, I doubt he'll be distracted.
If that is the case, then the simple act of taking your eyes off the road / vehicles around you to try and decipher your gps position would fall under "distracted" especially if the sun is making it tough to read.
Would performing that act be any better than say, someone texting while driving a car and then killing a motorcyclist/biker? No.

Correct, GPS. I also use it as my XM Radio. I don't plan on watching movies on it or surfing the web or playing games, so I don't think it will be a distraction. If I was going to do that I would just mount an iPad there. I can also use it to video record events like rolling thunder or something like that.
Yes it is mounted using a sticky pad that gets stuck to the bar and the mount has a rubber pad (anti rotation) and the mount it self is held on with two zip ties, I will be also using safety wire to hold it in place in case the event of both zip ties braking at the same time. The clip is made of a rigid plastic (ram mount is very good stuff, check out their site ram-mount.com) and can be clocked at multiple positions.
Also, if this can distract some one when mounted where it is and haveing to take the occasional glance at it, I best not look at my fuel gauge or speedo cause I have to look further down to see them. Not to mention that I better not look into getting a Touring model anytime soon, I could only imaging what a fairing with a radio and all those gauges could cause me to do. I still can't figure out how those guys with goldwings manage to get out of their driveways, really they have alot of distractions. Just saying!
I know its all constructive opinions and I do value them, but stop over thinking the simplisties of function.
I use a Bluetooth ear bud system and would rather have an easier way to access my iPhone when I stop then having to dig through my pockets.
